Hey guys,


So vipfto has found me a lovely set of coilovers for $800 They work out cheaper than buying new springs, shocks and strut tops...

My question is; do coilovers offer a significantly greater handling benefit than a set of springs/shocks? I;m not wanting to slam my car or anything like that, I'm just aiming at cornering supremacy... Looked at springs and shocks and I'm not sure how much a full set of shocks will set me back, and if i should really replace my strut tops in the first place (mine are all brittle and cracked).

Someone help before I hit the 'add to cart' button?

A proper shock and spring setup can be just as good as coilovers. However adjustable coilovers give you obviously more adjustment options.

Many coilovers are bordering on the side of too harsh for street use but they can also make your car handle much better.

The cusco coilovers I had in the smurf were more comfortable than the super low lovell springs and KYBs I have in my black GR now and it got around a corner much nicer than my current car.

I believe most coilovers are too harsh. And youll find if they are adjusted towards the harder side on most Australian roads, it will make your handling worse, not better. The only place youll notice any significant benefit from coilovers is on the track.

And the adjustment sounds great in principle, but for 99% of people this means adjust them once or twice in the first week, realise how much of a pain in the arse that is and then never do it again.

In regards to strut tops - can anybody explain how important they are? I'm a few hundred over my budget and I'm working out where I can cut some costing... Mine are cracked etc and I'm not sure if this is an issue or not (hence why i was going to get new strut tops)

Also having trouble sourcing front shocks within Australia (online).

KYB Excel G.They arent listed for the FTO, but the s40 volvo ones are a good fit. Just do a search for KYB Excel G and Part number on the forum and you get the right numbers. Pair them with a set of lowering springs and itll give you a good ride (thats what im running)

Same as what I'm running here, I got my shocks from Repco, and some Dobinons lowering springs.
Although I think that the Eibach seem a little stiffer.

If going for shocks and springs I would highly recommend RS*R Ti2000 springs.

Don't forget you can spend ridiculous amounts on money on suspension but if the tyres you have are useless all that money goes to waste. Been told by a few people I know that tyres are a good place to start.

*wears out good tyres before completing suspension mods*
