fuel gauge not reading right?

So my fuel gauge doesn't work properly. After a while it just sits on zero and the low fuel light doesn't come on? I have always filled it up after its been on zero for a while because I don't want to be stuck on the road. But I still want to see if my low fuel light is working but I'm too scared to keep it on zero. It doesn't read right and it drops faster than usual then sits on zero for a while until I fill it up. The fuel also rises if I accelerate fast down hill. Any idea on how I can fix this or how I can drain my fuel without going into the fuel tank? Also once the light comes on which it never has I'm just wonder how much would be left in the tank when it comes one (in litres) thanks sorry if u couldn't understand what I'm saying

How many K's are you getting out of your tank? I know this will vary due to driving style, by my 97 Manual would get about 500-517k's before fuel light came on. I could then get about another 100k after the light was on...

But this was mixed freeway and city traffic, as it was my daily and taken to work outside of peak hour.

Schumie had a problem with his fuel gauge, and I believe it may be in his COTY thread. It just involved cleaning the mechanism (that I think is in tank) so that the gauge would be able to freely move to the right level. There was a whole heap of gunk on it, if memory serves correct.

Ive had that problem with another car before, they can sometimes get covered in sh*t as rock_it said. I'd try looking into that first

Umm yeah.. Don't go down hills....
Of course your fuel is going to move to different levels in the tank if ya pumpin it down a hill.

Just Take a Fuken jerry can and run it dry, see if the lights comes on. Fill it up if it doesn't and u run out..obviously.

Yeah mines fucked... never fills beyond 3/4 of a tank, even after cleaning the sender unit ( which was covered in carbon) drove over 200k on 'E' this last week and the fuel light never came on... then I chickened out and put $20 in and it still didn't go over 'E'...

I think I had 225's on the front and 235's on the rear... But yeah, seeing if they are going to clear my brakes.. So still an option for me though at the moment...
