It seems as if i'm forever topping up my coolant what does this mean?

That your car needs to be cooler... 
Sounds like a leak somewhere... Are you noticing any leakage when parked? Are you filling up all the way up the filling pipe?
If you are noticing it drops from the top of the filling pipe, that is because it is not meant to be up that high, and it is just sending the excess stuff to the overflow bottle.
If you are really low, and can't see a leak, it could be leaking in through the heads possibly meaning a blown gasket ..
