something like a pump you only replace when they die as opposed to something like a filter which you replace on cyclical basis as a means of preventative maintenance to keep your car running well.

thanks ruchi,

so it wont wreck the engine if the water pump doesnt work?

do i just have to stop engine if it starts to overheat?

well if the engine overheats then yes you'll do damage to it, but there's no way to determine the life of the pump, so you just replace it when it needs it.

very loosely speaking there are parts you replace on a cyclical basis as part of preventative maintenance and parts you replace when they are faulty. The pump fits into the later part.

It's a bit like asking when do you replace the alternator, you don't replace the pump or alternator every XX kms rather you replace them when they are faulty (or on their way out).

I thought you changed the water pump every 2nd cambelt change, approx every 180,000km. It makes sense to do it at the same time as your cambelt change as you need to remove the belt to change it. My pump started to leak after 140,000km :?

ok,

and how about fuel pumps, how often should they be replaced?

How much should each of these cost to replace?

thanks

I agree that it makes sense to do this at the same time as a major service, as they have to remove many of the same parts, but I've never seen a recommended service schedule for this.

Have I missed this in a manual somewhere?

I don't think that I've ever read it in a service manual, well my japanese isn't too good but it isn't in the english version :)

I was just told this by a mechanic and we all know that they always agree on everything :?

I'll bet you were! One who was looking to buy a new yacht, perhaps? ;)

Only kidding.

fuel pumps never.

If you start showing syptoms of fuel pump failiure, eg running lean, clogged cat etc then you should replace it if the pumps at fault.
