Overheating :(
So tonight this happened...
I was driving for about 10 mins and noticed it was 3/4 of the way to H. I let the car cool, drove it for another mine and it exceeded the halfway point again. Got a free tow with RACV which was all good, glad I didn't have to limp it home.
Anyway down to the point... Here are the facts:
- Car had almost no coolant in the resevoir when I got it, topped it up, about a week later it randomly dropped it all, coolant f**king everywhere, pure green, reservoir empty.
- Topped it back up and had no issues for a month or so
- About a week ago I noticed sometimes coolant was burning around the radiator cap and smoking from it
- Today the car is once again burning coolant around the cap and a fair bit of smoke/steam coming out of it. Car is overheating quickly, get it towed home.
Where do I start? A few people reckon it is the water pump however the radiator cap is looking pretty fucked and I am almost certain it isn't sealing properly so I'm hoping that is it...

Water pump is on the opposite side of the engine, swap the cap over and see how you go. Could also be the thermostat housing gasket.

I am going to flush the coolant, I found this thread but am a bit confused, do I just take the cap off and undo the valve on the drivers side, or given I'm having a serious issue should I do the hose thing with the thermostat removed?

I'd do the hose thing. Get it right into that radiator.

When I check the thermostat I want to replace the gaskets, camskill has 2 part numbers ad on eBay I can only get them from international sellers, would supercheap or bursons stock them?

There is no gasket. 3 Bond Grey it.

are you sure? Pretty sure I changed the gasket when I put the new engine in jaans.
Super cheap had it on the shelf.

There is a rubber o-ring around the outer edge of the thermostat, that is the only gasket.
I don't use anything else but the o-ring to seal it.

The mitsubishi one comes with thermostat and o-ring.

Update time!
So we took out the thermostat and it opened up fully after about 2 mins @100C in a pot, Dad deemed that OK so all good.
We flushed out the radiator until it was crystal clear, and run the car on idle for about 10 mins, once it had where it usually sits just before the middle coolant began to go down, more so after revving so that was all good too! Thermofans kicked in as needed.
Gave it a 5 min drive giving it solid revs after and it didn't move it all - last time it overheated it was just normal driving and after only 5 mins.
So now I am lost, I think the issue could have been me being a huge idiot and putting straight coolant in without diluting it, this was running through the whole system...

Bad sensor?
What coolant did u put in? U would have to have bought lots of small undiluted bottles of coolant to fill it up

Sensor ok I think, when it overheated it spewed coolant and was hotter than normal.
