Rattle from Transmission Pan

Post by Col_Ford »

Hi All,

my son has just bought his first car a 99 FTO GX auto with 125K on the clock.
When we drove it we noticed a rattle on the front on the passenger side. It sounded like it was something in the suspension but on the weekend I traced the noise back to the transmission. It a rattles when you engage drive or reverse but the noise goes away when you drive it and the transmission seems to work fine.

Any idea what it could be?

Thanks
Col

It sounds like a creaky suspension noise. I though maybe it was the engine mount but the noise seemed to be coming from the transmission. I will climb under again on the weekend and have another look.

    Thanks

Could be multiple things.. gearbox mount(s), something internal, something that's just near the transmission..
    I fix cars.

    Transmission fluid level too low?

    To check level...
Take car for a drive to warm trans up to operating temp.
Stop car on level surface, leave engine running.
Go through all gear selections a few times.
Stiil have engine running and leave in neutral, check level with dipstick, should be at hot mark.
If low top it up through dipstick tube.
