Getting Brakes Done

Post by Strkszone »

Hey guys, so I'm getting new pads just wondering what everyone feels is a reasonable price to expect.

I'm looking for

Supply and Fitting of 2 Brake Pads (heard Bendix was good, any confirmation)

Machined Rotor

Fit / Bleed Calipers

Any ideas on the price range I should be expecting from shops?

This for the front? Not really worth machining the fronts considering you can get brand new rotors for about $70 or so.

Bloak I just spoke to told me he could get it done for $240 all up.

Pads are $70 each,

Rotors combined $70?

Either way only $100 labor cost doesn't sound too bad.

Pads come in a set of 4. As in 2 for each wheel. Bendix are about $70 for a set of fronts.

And yes, $70 for a set of 2 rotors.

Okay, so 4 pads, 2 for each front wheel, $70 for the set.

$70 for new rotors.

+ Labor of fitting them on.

Any idea where I should go about looking for new rotors?

I also wrote a guide on how to do them yourself. If you want to give it a go.

And just to make sure, you have twin piston calipers right?

Those say

Ebay wrote:TO SUIT 15 INCH WHEEL MODELS ONLY

This listing is for Disc Brake Rotors and Disc Pad Axle Pack to suit the above listed vehicle.

The pack includes: 2x Quality Disc Brake rotors; 1x Set of standard disc brake pads

Shipping is $15 anywhere in Australia via courier direct to your door. We can not send to PO Boxes via courier.

Pick Up is NOT available.
I run 18" wheels so not sure if that'll work.

Not really confident enough to do it myself without seeing it done first, money isn't something I'm in short supply of, just trying to consider all options. Pretty sure they're twin piston yeah, will need to double check though.

If its a GPX they'll be twin piston. If GR will be single piston.

Don't worry about the size. They're the right ones for twin piston calipers.

Alright cheers, thanks for that. Yeah twin piston just checked (it's a GPX)

Just checked with a local shop they charge $60 each rotor and $88 for the pads. Almost 200 in parts alone, yuck... pretty sure I'm definitely not touching them!

Only did the comparison because my mechanic said $240 all up with pads and machined rotors. Vectose mentioned rotors should be ~$70 for a pair brand new so not really in my best interest to machine them. I won't skimp out on the pads, $88 seems fine, but are base level Bendix any good? Or is there better out there that I should be considering?

There will always be better than Bendix, they aren't that great to be honest. And chances are if you let your mechanic choose, he will put some cheap ass $20 pads on unless he specifically stated what brand he will use.

Have heard of places charging 130 odd bucks for "genuine" pads and using generic 20 dorra rubbish... go supply parts. Buy some decent EBCs. Don't skimp out on tyres or brakes would be my advice.
I fix cars.

Alright having a look at EBC's Redstuff pads now. Just curious but I've seen brake upgrades go for well over $3k, is there any particular reason that is...? Since from what I'm seeing... $70 rotors, $50 calipers, $80 pads, $200 brake lines... doesn't even touch $1k. Am I missing something..? Where is the bulk of the cost at?

Yeah, getting new tires soon as well for the fronts. I skimped out on tires from Bob Jane and it was the worst decision I made, terrible company they are. (Ones I'm running now are from the Lorax so they were used, but still had decent life in em)

Wouldn't be 3k. About the 2k mark would get you a big brake kit.

That's a whole upgrade, as in larger calipers with more pistons, larger discs etc.

I did my upgrade from a GTO for about $600. Not a straight fit though reguires a bit of modding.

Not needed for a stock FTO though.

Ah okay, so larger disks and more pistons in the calipers are the main contributor to the price increase? Yeah $3k was a bit of an exaggerated example, but was just curious how the price gap could be so large.
