Project F tail light restoration

Last year I picked up a set of Project F tail lights for $20. They were missing a few bits but for $20 I thought why not.

So I had some free time and decided to make some LED discs for them.

I used reflective tape underneath the LEDs for reflectors.

Parkers will be a ring, then the whole lot will light up for brakes.

The lenses I got with them aren't that great. So need to see if I can get somewhere to replicate them or just tint them.

Looks great, nice work!
Not very often you see people making their own circuit boards for their tail lights!

Cheers guys.

Spent about 6 hours sanding and polishing one of the lenses.

I tried fixing up one of them last year but didn't sand down far enough so it still has some crazing and yellowing and will be redoing that one.

Few light scratches can be seen from certain angles but from what it was I'm extremely happy with the result.

Started with 40 grit on a random orbital sander then went up to 2000 grit.

What they originally looked like.

Bennoz wrote:Lol, f*cken project Fs. I've said it before & I'll say it again, get the lenses down to an injection moulder for reproduction.

Will be quite happy to eat my hat when someone actually gets a restored set put in their car & actually look good!
Will you be eating said hat at bonfire?

Looking good!
What are your plans for the reversing light, just a standard LED bulb?

Nah, will be making up a panel for that as well. Easy enough though and don't need a pcb.

Wanted to get a few opinions on if I should put a lens in front of each light.

As such...

BTW, red lense on indicator has absolutely no change on colour output, still orange.

Why did you choose through hole over surfacemount?

Bought these LEDs a while back for my other tail light project. And going by others recommendations on another forum for vehicle lighting mods were the best LEDs to use.

Another update.

Made up some boards for the reverse lights and painted the housing gloss black.

Also trying out just a ring for the indicator. Looks a bit better I reckon and won't clash too much.

they look sweet as...

i prefer the less sparkly left side BUT if that is a red piece of plastic over the top of the LEDs it may be just one more part to fall off/go wrong in the future...

could you spray tint red the LED bulbs on the right to get the same effect?

i like the ring indicators best... having said that and arriving to the party waaaayy too late... why must they be round at all?

my suggestion/hopes would be for something far more aventador inspired!
