Manual Transmission - Access while in car?

Hi everyone,

Just wondering how much of the manual transmission is accessible while the transmission is still mounted in the car?

My car is missing 5th gear (reportedly, I haven't driven it to know what exactly is going on) and wondering if the transmission needs to come out or whether there is a cover (like automatics) that allows some access to the internals, especially where 5th gear is?

You're going to have to remove it to replace a gear, I'm 99.999% certain.

I am not sure if I would need to replace 5th, or something became loose there?

The internals of the transmission were actually in a different gearbox and were transferred over into the FTO casing.
Any ideas of what could cause 5th to be missing?
It seems like the gearstick goes into where 5th is meant to be, but then it is as if it is in neutral.

Selector bracket broken or slack cables, tried selecting 5th by hand?

I won't get the chance to test it for a few weeks, but yes my first point will be to try and select the gear at the transmission itself by hand.

If it is the selector fork, does the transmission need to come out?

If it's a selector fork, yes box out. I'd say it more likely the selector cable bracket on top of the box as Matt mentioned. The old style ones are renown for breaking.

You mean where the cables connect to the gearbox?

How obvious would this be if there was something wrong?
I had a look and on visual inspection it seemed fine (this was the first time I looked though so I don't know what "fine" and "not fine" looks, other than nothing stood out as really wrong)

Shake them both if they move a lot then they are broken.

Ok I will check them out.

If it is an internal problem, how hard is it to replace the selector fork once the gearbox is out?

Once you pull it apart they just kinda sit there.
