Hi guys,

Do cam seals need any sealant upon installation?
And how about those plastic/rubber seals on the other end of the cam gears, would they require sealant?

Crank seal I assume does not?
But half moon seals should have sealant?

I sealed my cam seals just a light bead and they don't leak. However I did not put enough sealant on my half moon seals and they leak like a sieve - currently in the process of ripping the carriers out again to redo.

I feel bad for you, that is a horrible job to do
If mine leak after I am done.... well I don't want to think about that.

I would use sealant. 3 bond grey or similar. Just make its the oil/petroleum grade one.

+1 for Threebond Grey. Use that on most of my gaskets.

This time I took the cams out so the cam caps are off and can be cleaned.
But if I put a sealant what will happen the next timing belt swap, would I need to remove the rocker covers and cam caps where the cam seals are?

I have permatex ultra black - This should also be fine I assume? It is specific to high oil and high temp conditions

Errrr, caps can stay in for timing belt change. Also, timing belt only due every 100,000km so shouldn't be too much of a worry?

Yep if it can handle high temperatures and oil then it should be fine.

The caps are off as I took the cams out.
What I meant though was next time they need replacing it will be very difficult to clean out the old sealant when replacing the cam seals.

But I might use some anyway, would hate to have to remove the timing belt off again if they leak straight away

Nah can be cleaned it isn't that difficult.

Yeah can just rub it with a rag and peels off.

I'm currently cleaning the sealant the engine builder used when assembling the motor and it is a real PITA

Not sure what it is but it's light in colour, sort of like a cream colour. Seems very strong (stronger than it should be for the application).
