Currently have an FTO in the workshop for a trans rebuild. Any of you guys? This thing is looked after very good nick still ticks though .

Youd be better off replacing the transmission wouldnt you rather than a rebuild. Would have thought it would be 50% cheaper. Ive been selling the 4sp auto trans for $250 in working order, so they arent exactly expensive.

Sorta. If you know what you're doing (not me) you can rebuild gearboxes/transmissions fairly easily and quickly. If you can get parts and have the know how, you end up with basically a new gearbox as opposed to one with unknown history and life left in it.

Maybe, but the customer pays a bomb. My legnum box cost $4800 to rebuild. A 2nd hand box would have cost a quarter of that. Tell me how that is cheap....

That is an expensive rebuild. You are right, just swapping over a second hand box would be easier and cheaper. I can only assume either they couldn't source one or they were willing to pay heaps more for peace of mind.

I had my manual done, but dunno what price would be for the auto

im on my forth trans so they aren't exactly reliable and your suggesting a second hand box? Do it right!

i see where ya coming from though Fto is old but the one we are doing is for a person who wanted a. Rebuild as it's a future project.

You still need a rebuilt torque converter and labour on top.

Retail as follows:
Rebuild kit, steels and rebuilt tc is bout 900.
You will need oil $100 please cooler $150.

So that plus labour you'll be looking at a bit.

Nah it's $1400 trade.

Also 2 years warranty compared to no or 3 month warranty on a second hand.

Also from my time in the trade would I get a second hand box? No

The the FTO autos prone to failure?
I know in Magnas (and Galants) they have a wave springs that fail quite frequently and take out the whole transmission.
There is a replacement part which doesn't fail
