ABS?

Post by Boris »

I did a search but couldn't find anything about how to check you have ABS. Ofcourse the easiest way is to lock up i know... My car I think has ABS, cos I can't even lock my wheels even on a dirt road doing 80km/h... :|

What i'm after is evidence like the actual computer that controls ABS, or some parts from the ABS system... that can confirm that I have ABS...

And it's strange, I always though that ABS is linked with the Airbags, but I don't exactly have airbags... :|

I don't know where the ABS computer is located but there's a few other things you can do to see if you car ever had ABS. Check if there is a globe behind the ABS light on your dash and also check the main fuse box under the bonnet. Both the light and fuse will only be there if you had ABS and if it was disabled for someone reason they probably wouldn't have bothered removing them (especially the dash light).

Okay, I'll check the fuses, Is the warning light behind the dash meant to come on when the ABS is being used?

Mate, I tried locking them up, and they don't lock up, and I even get the brake pedal pulsating... That's why i'm asking for physical evidence here.

ABS check light should come on when you start your engine.

hmmm if you dont have ABS maybe youre using donuts as brake pads :P

i'd say check the fuses too.... i think the ABS computer sits somewhere in the dash near the climate control... dont quote me on that though

Hey Boris,
I have exactly the same situation,
Cant lock the tyres, however, no ABS light comes on, either at the start or hard braking.
And also I have that orange light, the car with skid marks, which comes up when I turn the engine on.
Had a look at my fuse box, and it looks to me that there are fuses for ABS in there.
Will take the picture of fuse box and post it tommorrow.

use the manual... it has the fuse locations in the engine bay for ABS...
if there is a fuse in there then its got ABS...

if you don't get a shuddering from your brakes when you plant htem and you don't lock up... either your pads are screwed or your brake fluid is...

(shuddering = ABS)
(locked brakes = no ABS)
(no shuddering / no lockups = not enough braking force)

take out the radio/head unit and look straight ahead (towards the engine) you sould see a computer, about the height of where your knee would be (not on the floor) the computer has 2 connectors comming of it

I loose traction almost every day, yet I don't feel no traction control, and that light has never come on during that loss of traction, if it was traction control should I also have a button somewhere to turn it off?

Could it be that the Series I fto's ABS light is different to the Series II fto's, which have a red "ABS" light, because all the manuals that are on the net are for Series II fto's... :|

My orange light, is exactly in the place where the "ABS" light is meant to be... :|

I'm just gonna pull out my headunit when i have time.

Is this button meant to be next to where you adjust your mirrors? When I got my car, one of those holes was empty, and had just the hole in it.

I'm gonna check the fuses today... :|

Even if u dont have the manual, the fuse box cover has ABS written on it...so check the diagram and see if there is a fuse missing...

Tried to figure out if I got ABS on the weekend, so can explain what this orange light (car with skid marks behind) is on the dash, which appears for couple of seconds during start up.

Lucky it was raining last saturday, found a wet spot, did around 80kmh, full braking. Tyres did not lock, in the main time, I could hear the nocking sound which I guess it was ABS, also could feel the back kick under my foot which I guess ABS again. However, orange light did not come up on the dash.

To see it further, took out my head unit. There is a computer, looking like a metal box behind and two loads of cables coming out of it. One of the jack is white, and the other one is yellow. Couldnt see any writings on the box.

As far as I understand my GPX has ABS, and this wierd orange light is for ABS.

Interesting, my dealer told me that there is no ABS in the car, when I was buying.
