How do you adjust your own tappets!??

Post by mr-charisma »

Can someone please tell me what is involved in "Adjusting the Tappets"?

I've searched the forum topics on here, and on ftooc.org and I've read as many DIY Guides on the net as I can find - a lot of them mention how to make the tools required, and the clearances for the tappets etc...

... but I have not been able to find any guides that go into the specifics of what it actually means to "Adjust your tappets" or what to expect once I've gotten in there and am about to start fiddling with stuff.

Before I start doing it, I want to be 100% certain about what it is I need to do so that I don't mess anything up - is it something that should become obvious once I start? Is there more to it than just tightening/ loosening a bunch of nuts/screws in there?

Does anyone know of where I can find pictures/diagrams of the tappets etc that might make it easier for a first timer to do it?

Also, If theres anyone in Brissy or Gold Coast that has done it before or can help me I will gladly shout you a slab or bottle of whatever you like to drink / return the favour.

In that DIY I adjusted the valve gap between the rocker and valve, I did it this way at first so I was sure that both valves had the same gap clearance, In the work shop manual they set the gap by putting the feeler gauges between the low speed cam lobe and the roller on the rocker (low speed lobe it the one in the centre and high speed lobe sits on the right in the pic).

I have done it both ways, both came with the same results, "A quiet engine - no more ticking", doing it the way as stated in the workshop manual is a lot easier and quicker.
