Wild Steering / Uncontrolable

Post by Candydaman »

Hi Guys, Ever since I bought my FTO i have had problems with the stearing. If i go over a large bump or rough patch on the road the stearing wheel goes wild and i have to make sure i have a firm grip on the wheel otherwise i could smash it!, My tires appear to be in fairly good nick and i have had new suspension put on about 6 months ago (this didn't solve the problem, however did stop the loud creeking noise that started to happen). Also I have herd of a device for the FTO that allows it to pick up in speed (that boost of speed you seem to get after the 4-5000 rpm mark ) that will make it kick in sooner.. I think its a MIVEC controller ... Is someone pulling my leg or is there something out there that will do this.. Last of all does anyone have an opinion on getting a full exhaush (extractors) fitted to my beast and if so how much power gain did you get/would i get....

first, fix up the steering issue, before putting out more power.
Any accidents?
Pedders 28 points suspension check for $14 is a good option get some diagnostics done, just dont get anything done by them, test only

Secondly, get the seat covers done :D

only than you can worry about the rest

No accidents :), seat covers would be good ( i do have woolen ones at the moment..getting a little old though), however your in melbourne and im in queensland.. Also does anyone know where in brissy i can get a good exhaust fitted, i have shopped around a bit and everyone is quoting me around the 1000 to 2000 dollar mark, yet i notice the guys in wa and thereabouts seem to be picking them up for around the 800 to 1000 mark.

Jack the car up, with the wheel on, grasp wheel at 3:45 and shake from side to side and see if there is any play other than steering moving (steering movement feels smooth) then grip wheel at 12 and 6 oclock and repeat.

if you get movement on the 3:45 shake you have a worn track rod end or wheel bearing. If you get movement at 12 & 6, its either a the bottom ball join or a frame bushes. Failing that try grabbing your ARB and seeing if you can move it from side to side (worn ARB bushes).

well I can tell you there is a thing called a mivec controller as I have one in my car its a good setup and yes you can change the mivec to come in at what ever RPM you wish.
BUT if its not set at the right RPM you will just run the car rich with fuel and will get no benifit out of it, you have to get the car dyno tuned.
there is also a lot of better units out there so have a look around befor you just get one.
Like mxysxy said get steering issue looked at first :D
A good full exhaust and extractors will set you back about $1500-$2000 more power high flow cat 2 1/2inch pipe mandrell bend not standard pressed pipe as you will be going from a 2 1/2inch pipe and then down to a 2inch at each turn you have.

If the steering and suspension are in good order try reducing the amount of positive castor angle( even if its within specs).
Only had similiar problem on trucks but when it happens its almost impossible to hold.
