i have a depressing feeling my gearbox is on the way out.

I came to this conclusion thats its prolly the synchro's because if i put it into 4th and then 1st, it goes in, which some people have told me its a classic sign that the synchros are on the way out.

Plus,if i put it at the gate of 1st gear and let the car roll forward, 1st gear then engages.

:(

anyone here have experience with reco' gearboxes?
how much is a synchro set, and a bearing set?

Your problem is clutch not GB the clutch is not releasing properly and the syncros are doing the job there supposed to and with load on the syncro it prevents gear selection.
If you try to select reverse after pressing the pedal reverse gear will be grating, for what ever reason the clutch is dragging and not allowing the clutch plate to stop when selecting gear while stationary

mmmm...

when i replaced my clutch to the Exedy cusion button clutch it was fine for about 5k km;s. then it got progressively worse fast.

since then i have replaced the pressure plate and bearing which didnt make any difference really.
