Knocking from front

Post by evoman »

Ok this problem is reaaaally starting to piss me off.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience, and what you ended up finding your problem to be.

Whenever I take off in first gear, there is a solid knock as if if something is hitting something in the front.
Problem seems to be more obvious the warmer the car is or the longer I drive it.

The same sound can sometimes be heard if I am driving slowly over a fairly steep gradient on the road, like an angled driveway.

I don't know if it is related, but I've noticed that there is a squelching sound only from the front suspension whenever I go over speed humps as well.

Droplinks, swaybar bushes, and lower control arm bushes are all less than a year old, as are the BC Coilovers.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Annoyingly when I got my mechanic to look at it about 2 months ago he couldn't find anything obviously wrong.

engine mount or have you double checked the top 17mm nut on coilovers asmay be loose causing them to move up and down and knock

I was going to say the same thing.

YOu might as well check your drop links anyway as they can bend within a year

Wow, what a joke that would be if the droplinks have also gone. Less than 6 months old, and the ones they replaced looked like the originals which had survived for 12 years.

Loose nut on the coilovers sounds pretty shonky - I damn well hope that's not the problem. Do you mean the nuts attaching it to the strut top?

Hmm, so took this to UAS to have a look at and they said everything steering/suspension/bearing related in the front seems perfect and couldn't fault anything.

After about 30 mins he reckoned the only thing he would question was the inner drive shaft joints. Which interestingly is the same conclusion Uncle Bennoz came up with 4 months ago in about a 5 minute inspection :salut:

I have no idea if this is the culprit but I'm going to try because a clunk every time I take off is doing my head in.
What is required to get these inner drive shafts fixed? Do they need to be reconditioned or replaced? Hard or difficult job? Can anyone recommend a good place to get this looked at?

On the topic of the squelching over speedhumps the guy reckoned that the drop links looked as new...which I would have hoped. He reckoned it was because of the poly control arm bush?...never heard that they cause squelching before.

It may well be the swaybar bushes, especially if they have run dry (lube has washed out)

I had my inner CV's done by a driveshaft guy in Rydalmere. Can dig up his card if you like, he was heaps cheap. I took the shafts into him though, he didn't have to pull them out.
