Oil Pump - When to replace?

Post by Gholdwayne »

First of all, I searched (but not extensively... ie, 1page  )

Ok so, with my entire forum activeness, I have never heard of the oil pump being replaced... My mate olly told me that i might as well should have replaced to oil pump along with the water pump and cambelt...

When do these things get replaced :? ?

Ok, and if one of you are very anal for a 100,000k service, tell me everything that you would do:: timing belt, water pump, fluids, brakes, etc etc,

The life of an oil pump is directly relative to the cars service history - ie if the oil is changed every 5000kms, then you may never have to change the pump.

Its not something that dies, its just becomes slightly less efficient as the impellor surfaces get scored by matel shards in the oil.

Ah! So I guess I should be fine with a 5000-10000kms and use a magnetic sump plug!

Exactly ;)

Having said that, if you ever had to rebuild an engine, you'd replace the pump just like you would piston rings & bearings.

Its not a bad idea..

Lots of old cars have them because of the poor quality materials used in the motors.

Waste of time and money IMO. If you have metal floating in your engine you have bigger issues than it getting re-circulated.

Wasn't there a guy on here who asked our opinions on these, we all said don't worry about one. He ignored us, brought one anyway then had oil leaks all over his driveway and garage floor and ended just putting his original one back on?

Made me lol

thats what I figured.. maybe I could sandwich a soft gasket between the sump plug washer and the sump... Cut that gasket really tightly around the plug's thread...

Yeah brass washer is the correct way to do it.
