I was in your boat, about 2 months ago....
And boy, what a long process it was... I had a butload of fto's inspected, and found out most had been involved in very serious accidents...
If your shopping for an fto, I'd personnanly try and find one, that hasn't been modded to the sh*t-house.. And I really recommened, getting every FTO, you are seroius about buying, fully inspected. Regardless of weather it's from a dealer, or private...
Since your in Melbourne, i have to recommened these guys
http://www.stateroads.com/
Sydney, also have a good company called SVC, but they are not avliable in Melbourne, so for Melbourne's best option are state roads...
THey were about a million times more through, with their check, then RACV ever could've been. THey are not a whole stack cheaper either, I think maybe 175, but they are worth every cent...
Also, it's prolly best you stay on site, during the inspection as well, as the inspector can give a lot of good advice during the inspection, you can learn a thing or two, and ask him any questions you have..

NRMA
I had the NRMA check mine out, $199 ($40 discount cause I'm an RACQ member).
It paid for itself well and truly. The reverse lights weren't working and it cost the owner over $300 to fix them.
That being said...
They did not tell me that the strut brace had a crack in it.
They did not tell me the air con needed repair (hopefully just regassing).
They did not tell me that the headlights weren't aimed correctly. Turned out to be the bulb not seated correctly but didn't find that out till I was out on a country road.
Overall, well worth it but certainly not thorough enough.
RACQ provides a similar service for much the same price.
