Another mini DIY......@ Vectose's this time
Going up to Newcastle on Friday afternoon to help Vectose adjust his tappets
We should be able to stop his engine sounding like a diesel

Re: Love my tappets
I am at Vectoses place now, just adjusted his tappets. HE is putting engine back together. Spec for exhuast tappet is gap of 0.13mm, his exhaust tappets had a gap of 0.33mm.

Re: Love my tappets
Good fun had at Vectose's
Ok, this is what happened.........
I adjusted all of Vectose's tappets to specs........Vectose put the engine back together.......Started engine and all the tappet noises went silent.......BUT........One tappet became noisier, a distinct single tappet noise quite loud.......We stripped the engine back down and re-set all the tappets, even though when we rechecked them they were all still in spec........Put engine back together and the single tappet noise remained.
Engine is quite sludged up from previous owner not looking after it and the cam lobes are wearing, one cam lobe has a deep worn grove and is the only lobe that is silver. I was thinking that one of the oil galleries might be sludged up and not feeding oil to one/or more of the tappets, causing a noisey un-lubed tappet. I have suggested that Vectose runs an engine flush and do an oil change.
Any other ideas????????
Pics.......
I thought by the sound of the engine I was servicing a diesel

Sludge...Look at the cam lobes

P.S. Vectose, I left my sunnies on your work bench

Re: Love my tappets
BIG thanks to Phil for coming out and adjusting my tappets. We had a very fun day
Phil started adjusting the tappets at around 1:00PM with the rocker covers already off, engine was back together by about 3:00PM with a single noisy tappet.
Then we took the front rocker cover off twice to re-adjust what we thought were the culprits of the noisy tappet.
When that didn't solve the noise, intake manifold and rear rocker cover came off again and Phil re-adjusted and fine tuned all of the rear tappets.
Engine was back together by about 8:00PM with the noise still present
Took the car for a test drive and it feels and sounds a lot better when accelerating, not as sloppy as it was before.
Should also mention that this single noisy tappet is a lot louder than my tappets ever were while cold. They used to be almost completely silent for the first 10 minutes on a cold start.
P.P.S. Found your sunnies, how should we go about getting them back to you?

Re: Love my tappets
Good job guys, but technically, you've only done half the job... there are also 12 hydraulic tappets in a Mivec motor. They sit up under the cam caps & hold the mivec lob on the cam when its not in use...
And given the sludgey sh*t oil that's caked around those rocker covers, I'm walling to wager a teste that's what it will be...
A flush may help, a hydraulic tappet reco would be better, replacing them is the bees knees.
I did a write up here on how to squeeze the scum & baked oil out of the insides of tappets here. It was based on the GR style tappets, but the same principles apply:
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7258&start=40

Alternatively, it could be a busted adjuster collet. These plastic things have a habit of cracking with age (and poor maintenance.)

Thanks Bennoz, this explains it perfectly, I am going to become......."The FTO Australia Tappet Man"Bennoz wrote:Good job guys, but technically, you've only done half the job... there are also 12 hydraulic tappets in a Mivec motor. I have searched the forum for a good link for purchasing new MIVEC hydraulic tappets, but have only found a sh*t load of links for GR tappets.
Where is the best place to source new MIVEC hydraulic tappets and adjuster collets?
I am going to replace mine as well

Re: Love my tappets
I was going to say about the plastic things but then seen that Ben had posted up about them
And agree looking at the funky old oil sh*t I would say the hidrolic ones are done for/ clogged up. Big time.
I think I read some place that they are all the same phil between the gr's and gpx's.
