Changing a head gasket is a piece of piss.
Drain oil and water out of engine
Strip off manifold, etc
Take off rocker covers,
Mark your cambelt (or get a new one) and remove it along with other anciliary belts.
You then need to remove the camshaft carrier.
Hey-Hoe, your left with the cylinder head ready to come off.
It can take a while if your not used to doing it but if it saves you a couple of grand then go for it. There isn't really that much to go wrong if you take your time.

Then you got the trouble of putting the heads back on
- You got to tension the bolts up correctly in the right order, if you didn't you will most likely end up doing a head gasket again,
- Then you got to reseal the cam carrier, you got to apply the liquid gasket to it, if you didn't put enough it will leak or if you put too much it will get into the oil gallery and clog it up,
- Then you got to put timing belt on.
It sounds scary but its not that bad, but I reacommed that you have some mechanical skill to do this job, if not you will most likely will have to do it again and cost you more.

Rough idle, loss of coolant, caramel coloured residue at the bottom of bucket when changing oil, caramel residue on the bottom of radiator cap, loss of power, unstable idle, poor fuel econ, coolant coming out of gasket externally, white residue on exhuast manifold are are symptoms of a leaky head gasket.
But people have to understand theres no point assuming. Any mech will be able to tell you for sure if your head gaskget is leaky.
There sometimes is always an oily residue in your coolant, due to contamination.
Dont assume, get it tested it could save you a heap of money.

hi guys, i just sent my car to mitsubishi service centre to get it checked, again... just to make sure it's the head gasket that's causing the trouble. and guess what? they reckon it's not the head gasket but the camseal!!? wtf?!
before this, 2 mechanics from 2 diff workshops said it was the head gasket... damn i really dunno what to do now, worried that after spending $1300 to fix the camseal+other minor probs, it still turn out to be head gasket ultimately...
my question for now: is there a DEFINITE way of telling whether it's the head gasket rather than camseal? compression test??
