Hey, that is not as silly as it sounds.

Not that I am saying that it was silly...just, ah you know what I mean.

I would be interested, for one. I am sure there are others who would be keen. Of course, they still have to be adjusted correctly.

I'd consider it - but probably wouldnt buy a whole set - tomorrow morning im going to clean them out and see how it goes.

as far as i know i'm the first to do it on these forums and its been a few months since i did.

So far 10,000kms +.

I reason why i cleaned them was because i had lifter noise during startup, dissapeared for a minute then return during the warmup period. After a slight moment of no lifter noise, my car basically had a constant tap when warm. So basically all the time.

I researched a bit about cleaning them, so i took the plunge, without instruction and knowledge of anyone else cleaning them, to try it out.

Boy did the process do wonders for me car. No more constant ticking when warm. But it still taps during a cold startup. I dont get the ticking during warmup, sometimes it taps longer than others, but a damn fine difference from what it use to be.

BUT! slowly but surely the tapping is getting longer and longer during startup, still nowhere near the time before the clean, and maybe a tick here and there when warm.

I dont find the process a waste of time, during summer the tapping might drop in duration substantially, but i have a feeling by next summer, the tappets would be back to their orginal state. I dont know for sure, but i was thinking when i got the price from kempys, that not that expensive for us GR owners, to totally eliminate the problem.

Its damn easy to do yourself, and i believe the 450 bucks overtime would pay for itself, no headaches about the tapping anymore. More embarrasment than anything.

So if us boys can organise a group buy im willing to do so. Everyone has known that i have cleaned my lifters a while ago, was it worth it? But would i pay money to have my car sound normal during startup? Hell yes.

Yeah I agree - the ticking sound is embarrasing when sitting in traffic!

Once I change the lifters I plan to change the oil every 5000kms like in my lancer. I had that engine for 110000kms and it never ticked (and I think it was manily due to the consistent oil and filter changes.

Im going to get some gasket maker, diesel and the stock extractors now and will be tackling it in a few hours

Just an update on the lifter noise for anyone who is interested...

The front bank was removed and cleaned 6000kms/3months ago... recently they started ticking at warmup (for about 5 minutes) then went away completly. When I cleaned them I only soaked them in dieself for about 2 hours...

I bought a new set for my rear bank (because it is considerably harder to work on) 2 months/4000kms ago and they seem to be going fine still.

So I had a spare set of lifters (from the rear bank) which I left to soak in diesel for about 4 weeks and I chucked those in a few days ago. It's nice and quiet now... Ill let everyone know if the noise comes back.

If anyone wants their lifters replaced, I can provide a service if you are in melbourne

you should work the lifter as well meaning pump it with a small drill bit inside the oil hole.

Get a lot of the sutff out.

the pry bar can be a bastard sometimes do you use one or something else?

When I did it I followed the vfaq on www.vfaq.com - I let them soak in diesel for 4 weeks, then pumped them in the diesel, then sprayed the insides with some carb cleaner...

and yep they sure did pee me off, but not anymore

I use a crowbar to get the rocker cover off and a big screwdriver that I found in the garage to get teh lifters out.... the rear bank killed my lower back with all the leaning over!

I see that every one here is talking about the auto.
What about manual owners?
Has any manual owners have done this?
I have done mine once and it didn't last very long.
I think it's because the manual ones you can't take the lifers out?
I have looked hard enough and I don't think the manual ones can be taken out to be cleaned.
All you can do is adjust them. Please prove me wrong....

Also, how's that group buy going?
Do they sell the lifters for the manual ones as well?

the GR uses hydraulic lifters that you can clean - the gpx uses solid lifters whic hyou adjust.

I have already adjusted them before.

I am asking if any one know if there are any ways of cleaning these ones out as it is quite difficult to adjust them in GPX and mine doesn't seem to last.

And any one know the price of new tappets for the GPX?
