new one = lots $$$$$$$$$$$ ( i know a standard 1997 model lancer alt. is over $700)
if you get your old one reco'd by a reputable auto electrician they will replace bushes, bearings, regulator etc. as part of the rebuild. Just as good as a new one, and cost way less!!

So anyone know a good reputable auto electrician somewhere in the eastern burbs of VIC? I might get my air con fixed at the same place if they can look at that as well.

Is a starter motor just a starter motor and something that any good auto elec can reco? Or is there something special about the FTO one? Sorry I have no mechanical skills whatsoever.
I could ask the same for my aircon, is it something any aircon mob could fix?

arent all alternators the same?
btw does anyone know how much power does the standard FTO alternator put out?
and does anyone know how much power a standard PC use? (slightly off topic but i figured this was the place to ask instead of a whole new thread)

na can get many different alternators! alternators can be rated in how many amps they can supply. I think the fto is about 60 amps, not sure though!
a computer usually has a 4-500 watt ( 5 or 12 volt i think

) power supply to power the box bit!

lol, yeah i know you can get different amps, but they all fit on the car the same way right (a couple of adjustable bolts and a belt)? can... say an alternator from a volvo go straight into a FTO? if thats the case wont an aftermarket alternator cost just as much as a recon (but brand new)?
and as for the computer question, i'm just trying to work out how big of an alternator would i need to run a PC + a 8" touch screen + a couple of subs (not turned up stupidly loud of course) + the rest of the car, and more importantly... how long could i run all of that just off the battery before i wont be able to start up the car.

Just to let you all know, got my alternator fixed, well... replaced. My mech who used to do my EF Ghia took a look at it, ended up getting a brand new Mitsubishi alternator installed with a new alternator belt.
He had to remove the RH drive shaft and lift the top engine mount to remove the sick alternator though! He couldn't see any other way to get it out. He's never worked on an FTO before though. And from what I've been reading up on with a GPX I knew it was a hard job but didn't know it was that hard!
Anyway all up he only charged me $367 for the alternator and $24 for the alternator belt and that includes labour. $391 total so I'm pretty happy.

thats the diy link on how to remove your alternator, not sure if u read it or not, think your mech might've gone around it the hard way.

Ah thanks BorepYano yeh I did read that but ages ago. I should have told my mechanic had I remembered lol. Oh well.
One thing I did notice is my central locking for the passenger door works again now. I thought the motor in it was about to die as it would unlock via keyless entry but never lock. Looked like it struggled everytime it tried to lock. Now it's perfect agian. Saved a bit of dosh there I think.
Thing is it was like that since I bought the car back in Jan so maybe the alternator was slowly dying since then.
So yeh hot tip there, if your central locking is struggling to lock or unlock it could be a power issue and not just a worn out motor.
