The hydraulic lifter has been done to death. I've done the whole cleaning thing and on my third set of hydraulic lifters. The whole cleaning lifter thing is absolute garbage. Look it does work for a few thousand kms but the noise always returns after a while.
People always say "my lifters were jammed and cleaning it unjammed it". The thing is the whole point of a lash adjuster is just that, to eliminate lash. A stiff lifter that has no play on the piston is a good lifter. If the lifter is full of oil and you still can push the piston down the lifter is bad, and no matter how much cleaning or bleeding will fix the lifter.
The only solution is to change the lifter. I've cleaned lifters twice and noise returns quicker the most you do it. Even with new lifters the noise returns after a couple of years. Best thing to do is regular oil changes!
The front bank of lifters always start to tick first. Why? Check out your PCV this causes the front bank to always sludge up quicker than the rear bank.
I believe that pic was taken after belt fitting and before tensioning it.
Timing belt tension was done to spec, I tensioned pulley @ 3nm using mits special tool + tension wrench. Hydraulic tension lock pin removed easy and the protrusion of the hydraulic tensioner was to specs.
Vectose has organised some replacement tappets to replace the noisey ones. and agree cleaning did not quieten the noisey tappets, only 1 - 2 are noisey.

Ah ok! Cool! I give you credit for doing everything else with the timing belt change and water pump. I can say out of the many timing belts i've done there is no belt I have experienced so far that comes close to being a head f*ck as the one in the FTO. Even with other mitsubishi V6's it takes half the time.
Was the ticking noise originally from the front bank further to the right? A set of lifters is about $200.00. The amount of people spending cash on expensive oils and additives and annoyance the best thing to do is just to change the lifters.

Noise was from the back bank intake middle set. We moved tappets around and moved the noise to front bank right hand side.

Yeah they are a pain! Always pump a lifter up before installation even a new one!

Now that we have eliminated the tappet adjust, tappet collets and hydraulic tappets.........
I'm starting to think that the cam lobe that has a worn groove in it isn't getting any oil to lube it.
If you run a cam/engine without oil the first thing to make noise is the tappets.
I'm wondering if you can run the engine with the front rocker cover off and manually pour some oil on the worn cam lobe and see if it quietens it?
Any other ideas peoples (Bennoz, payaya, Taz)

I changed out 5 as that's how many I got from ZFL45H1.

Wouldn't this have oil splattering everywhere?

Some engines do, some don't.......I have'nt done it on a FTO before. We do it at TAFE on diesel truck engines and it does not go everywhere.
You can tell me, after you have done it
EDIT: Do it with the oil cap off first for a small test of splatterness

How is changing your hydraulic lifters from one mivec motor to another going to half your lifter noise? Best thing to do is replace the hydraulic ones, I can't believe people are still on their original set! I'm on my third set! I cannot imagine what a standard will sound like!

Intake - 0.10 mm
Exhaust - 0.13 mm???

The Mivec engine has 12 adjustable lifters and then 6 hydraulic lifters in a single bank. If you look back a few pages you will see the photos Bennoz posted of them.

But the noise is only one solid tick, not many. And it only started occurring after the first tappet adjustment, my tappet noise was never this loud in the past and was not a single defined tick. The noise appears to be coming from the right of the front bank.

Well you have put one dud lifter in your car then. If like all other mitsubishi lifters wear out so get new ones. I should do a video of my cars engine, smooth as silk compared to every other I've heard and I don't even use expensive oil!!
In my eyes the only solution for lifter tick is new lifters, cleaning lifters, using expensive oil does sh*t!
