Just spit balling.
Have you changed out plugs, or had the compression checked?
I don't know but maybe one of the cylinders could be low, or one of the plugs could be only at half strength

Both myself and AJ agreed, it's nothing mechanical and definitely something electronic.
the fact it only falters in drive or reverse, and not all the time should be the biggest give away, but it simply doesn't seem to be an obvious thing...

Getting dangerously close to just dropping it off at the mechanics and saying 'call me when it's fixed' but where would be able to properly look into all of these suggestions and find a cure?

JEM next door would be able to sort it out, but they've got one hell of a wait list at the moment (about 6months from memory). They're also not the cheapest place around, but they'll get it fixed. I'll have a chat to the guys at lunch and see what they think.

Did you pull the ISC out and turn ignition to on to see if the plunger was moving???

That's a ISC issue! Pull the plug on your stepper and you watch your rpm surge higher than norm while warm in park and N.
The reason why its an intermittant issue is because the coils in the ISC heat up causing the problem. You can actually have a ISC test fine when cold but when hot the resistance is way out. This will also cause issues when cold.
Pull the harness and I bet ya there is no difference in engine characteristics. Test the harness to see if its fine. Its a common problem on Mitsubishi s.

Was very pleased with my Kicker 6x9s so i decided to add some bass. Walked into Jb Hi Fi expecting to get an amp and a sub. Came out with a Kicker amp, sub and he threw in some Kicker front speakers and Wiring kit because i bought a pioneer Headunit as well!
Getting it all professionally installed for around $100 on thursday! KEEN!
