I would have thought so. Will they work together or independently?

Yeah box has its own ECU.

Pretty sure they work together.

I have looked into this.

I remember reading that if you disconnect the tip box ecu from the Main ecu then tip mode works ok but Auto
either doesnt work or is extremely rough.

so i think its possible to go stand alone.

Car has the original ECU still in it with the piggy back extra fuel mini computer to control the extra injector.
if you remove the turbo and disconnect the extra injector car would run like a normal FTO again.

This is what made the car so great, it was literally a bolt on job, and the key reason I was going to buy it, as it 'should' have been hassle free.

But things do always go wrong, especially when you push the motor beyond factory.
hope it's all good AJ, can't imagine too much to be wrong with it.

The extra injector fuel line split. It has now been fixed and has had a run on the dyno to check that everything is ok.

The last time I gave it a push it was hitting what sounded like the limiter in 3rd, around the MIVEC change over point. I asked CRD to give that a go on the dyno and they said that it did it for them too.

It was worst when running high boost they said.

They spoke to Haltec who recommended a Platinum Sprint. The stock Mitsi ECU would run the basics like air con etc but this would run the timing and fuel.

CRD recommended removing the extra injector.

Thoughts?

If you want power, then yeah, go that route.

personally I'd keep it as it, purely for the cars history.

But it is your car.

In my opinion, it's taking things away from what HKS did to the car, if you went full kit and removed all the Jap gear, then it's simply becoming another turbo'd FTO.

But again, just my opinion and the statement in the middle applies the most.

EDIT: Meanwhile, no word of a lie, if you do go the full route of haltech, etc.
I will buy the existing gear off you. the extra injectors, controller, valve tamper, etc. (100%)
Put the funds toward the conversion. You have my number. ;)

^^^ x 2

But again its your car.
Plus your pushing it into the unknown which could spell disaster!
I'd put my faith in HKS to know what they were doing and the limits of the 6a12 etc...

Ahh, you're going all nostalgic on me...

HKS did a good job but it's old technology now and it looks like it's becoming unreliable.

Let's see what CRD come back with at the end of the week. Going to pick it up on Saturday.

Today they said that they are not sure if MIVEC is kicking in or not. They are going to do some more tests. They want to check that the power dip on the graph is MIVEC and nothing more problematic.

Well, these cars will be on the verge of 20yrs soon, so yep, nostalgia is coming.
Old technology or not, it's still a part of the car and can be made reliable.
Depends on what you want from the car in the end.

My offer still stands, I'll show you what old technology can do ;)

Was MIVEC kicking in any other gear?
Alternator???

1st and 2nd were fine. (MIVEC in 2nd = 120kmph) so I don't get MIVEC in 3rd let alone 4th very often :(

Has it always been like this? ever hit MIVEC in 3rd before? meanwhile by then you'd be at speed limit I assume...

I'm sure I've hit it before in 3rd without any issues. It wasn't until the new turbo and all that work got done and the boost up'd.

I've maxed it in 4th and hit the speed limiter once but don't think I was anywhere near the MIVEC change over point (although I wasn't looking at the speedo 8O )

Picked up HKS yesterday. Running fine, just as before. I've not tried to push it in any gear above 2nd for the moment.
They said the issue was worse/more noticeable when running the higher boost (10psi) so I'm just keeping it on low (7psi) for the most part.

Will seriously consider the ECU after tax time.

Only 7psi hay :hmm: time to hit the 1/4 for a rerun   .
Good to see the car back on the road AJ.

Yeah, can't wait to get it to the track but might as well do it when it's running 100%.

No  going from the last time we did a test run when you where on 7psi I had a chance to keep up
So now is a good time, well for me any way   .

I really need to get my project going :?

Ah, the old "Coffs 1/4 mile" you mean? Yeah, you'd have a fair chance at 7psi, non at 10 psi though.
