Im getting clunking noises when going over bumps ... coming from the rear mainly ..

Iv had it at 2 mechanics now , and neither of them can find it .... I did replace my rear shocks as they were busted and hoped that would fix it , but no .. still there..

And yes , iv checked for stuff rolling around in my spare tyre area etc ... its driving me nuts ! ... Anyone have any idea ? or seen it before ? or is it just my car specific ?

cheers

probably be the drop links...usually the issue

Also need to good check out of your bushes...

take it to a good suspension place if you are unsure

I had the same problem, if its a GR you can just replace the bushes, if its a GPX you have to replace the whole drop link.

the setups are basically the same, same issues...same noises.

Dumb question , but wouldnt of the bushes been checked when the shocks were replaced ?? ..

Hmm ok , drop link eh ? .. havnt heard about that yet ... ill drop that next time I have it in somewhere..

Yea i took it to pedders and the pricks tried to charge me almost $3000 and gave me a laundry list of problems ... including problems with power steering which i dont even notice ... I took it to my normal mechanic and he looked at it and what was on the pedders quote and said he was basically trying to shaft me , and he's well known for doing that in my area ...

My cars in very good condition , has 68,000 Kms on it , and iv had several places check it out , and tell me thats likely to be an accurate reading and its all in very good condition ... ( i was suss about a windback so had it checked out ) ... Its original every thing , wheels, shocks (was) , even has the original FTO matts on the inside that came with the car in 1995 ..

So which the question was put to me by my mechanic , what car thats done not even 5 years worth of driving needs that much spent on repairs , and $750 for a power steering problem that no one else can seem to find , and I cant notice it ? ... what the hell ?

Arrrh ... Im sick of dodgy F*&^cks ... I just want someone to repair the problems on my car without trying to sting me for another $1500 in the process ... it seems everywhere I go to have some small problem fixed , theres another "problem" that appears , that I cant notice, and have not known anything about , but its going to cost me $700 to fix it .... to which I still wont notice a difference ....

When the shocks were done, did they replace the 2 large rubber doughnut bushes that go on top of the rear shock where it mounts to the car?

Im not too sure ... I cant get my head under the car , its too low at the moment ...(thats the 1 thing iv had done to it , lowered) But ill take it back after new years and ask them to take another look .... Ill mention what you guys have said here and see if that helps ...

It seems its always 1 of two options with mechanics ... either 1: they cant find anything wrong and nothing gets fixed ... Or they find everything else other than what i want fixed , and take my money in the mean time for a problem Im not even sure exists ... lol ...

I took my car to the mechanics a while back and they noticed that the Droplinks and bushes on thefront were rubbing on the body of the car which would have been causing a scraping noise when going cornering sharply.

He also said that my front suspension needed to be replaced fairly soon, but not urgently - I have a clunking noise when going over bumps & things, which I've always assumed was my suspension., but my noise is coming from the front of the car.

I also had a clunking noise coming from the boot, which turned out to be caused by the jack, which needed more padding around it to stop it bouncing.

You could also have the exhaust checked, my friend (not an FTO) had a clunking noise in the rear of his car, which turned out the be the exhaust pipe bouncing around, hitting the underside of his car.

Your best bet is to try and find out from everyone you can, about whether they know a reputable mechanic who won't rip you off, and get them to check out your car to see what the problem is - Go for a drive with them in the car to show them it occurring as well if possible.

cool thanks for the advice ...

Yea it seems a good reliable and non-corrupt mechanic is worth his weight in gold lately...

for suspension I only take it to people who understand it. Go to a specialist and you will get a no bullshit answer. Not pedders.

I know places in Melb, not in NSW. Ask Bennoz he will know of some for sure.

The droplinks are not to hard to chnage yourself (once u work it out :P:P) and so are the rear swaybar bushes...

Use the search button and u will find a few threads with instructions and pictures...including where to get the parts.

Thanks for the offer :)

Iv been out to speak to my mechanic again today , as they've just come back , and got his opinion on what we can do to fix this bloody noise ... its not as annoying now after the new shocks , and its only in the back on impact .. not much impact just anything , going out of a drive way or something ...

He mentioned he;'s never seen the coils in my car before ... ie , how they all compress up down the bottom , and it makes sense that they could be the source of my noise ... Im guessing these are the stock coils ? but does anyone know anything about them ? ... The ones on my car look like normal springs up the top , but then compress down in to tightly wound and almost touching down the bottom .... which seems weird ....

Does this sound like it could be my problem ?

p.s .. I mentioned the drop links and they said it wasnt that , as they removed my entire sway bar and went for a drive last time they had it .. and it still did the noise ..

get some coil wrap..whiteline sell it.

But before u do that, if the springs have been touching you should be able to see the wear. Have a look its faily obvious.

Hmm , well , I think they have been ... Up the top where the coils are open they look fine , painted blue still ... down the bottom where their all compressed up , they look a tad rusty and dirty ... I suppose thats where its been worn ...

Iv put it into have the coils changed today , after which if that still dosnt fix my problem , ill just have to give up for now ... that will of been over $1000 iv paid to fix a problem that still hasnt been fixed ...

I originally put it in , and they told me my shocks were gone , and that was most likely making the noise ... Replaced the shocks and its still there ... now im changing the coils still not certain it will fix the problem ...
But my mechanic says he's quietly confident that it will ..

so fingers crossed eh ...
