Driving along the motorway and all of a sudden nothing... the engine just died! pulled over, no smoke no smell. tried starting the engine again but all I get is the starter motor turning but the engine will not ignite/engage?! Can't tell you much up to the break down as the stereo was up and the pedal was down. I have tried starting the car again this morning after a couple of months and the same, starter sounds fine but the engine will not turn over.

Any ideas?

Do you mean the engine won't fire? the only way the starter can sound good if the engine is not turning is if the starter pinion is not engaging the ring gear. If the engine is not turning (as in siezed) all you'l hear from the starter is the clicking of the solenoid.

Pretty obvious but does your fuel gauge work? Maybe your fuel lines are blocked? You'll need 2 people to do this but get someone to crank the engine for you and then pinch the fuel lines hard with your fingers to see if you can feel fuel running through there.

I recommend pinching the lines just underneath the engine cover if you have a Mivec engine. If not then they should be easy to get to.

Maybe your fuel pump has had it. I guess the only real way to test that one is if you pull it out then hook it up to a 12V battery to see if it works. Just don't have a smoke while you're doing it.

Maybe the power steering belt flung off and damaged the crank angle sensor. Just happend to me. You may not have heard it with the ICE up loud.

I agree with Spud it could be the crank angle sensor, but it could also be your fuel pump, it probably died, and all of the things that everyone has said also.
Get out fuel pressure tested and then check for codes.

do you run your petrol low?

could have caused the fuel pump to die, because if its not under the fuel line then it causes it to heat up

also check your ignition failure sensor. refer to the manual All you need is a multimeter.mike

fuel related for sure. Check to see if you have petrol if not fuel pump.
