Hey i was just wondering if i could get some advice and maybe a discussion going about Tiptronic.... sorry to all you manuals out there. but this probably wont interest you much! :?

i was wondering if i could ask people how much they use the manual feature in there car... because i LOVE using the quick shift But i think it may be unhealthy to use all the time :( so if you could tell me approximately how much you do and think you shood use it.. coz id like to find out before i wreck something else.....

thanks

Well, with an introduction like that...
Steve likes to keep his hand on his stick constantly, I like to have my hand on mine when it's appropriate

I don't see anything wrong with using tip often, or all the time. All you are doing is taking over the decisions on when to shift from the computer(s). Other than that it's the same as auto shifting. Only prob I have is when I've got the stereo cranked at the lights and then take off forgetting it's in tip . Thank god for rev limiters :D

My other favourite is the "Fark, thought I was in tip?" nudge up on the gear shift when it's actually in drive. I heard an Escort blow up an engine once by free revving it (ie no load on engine) and the thought of it scares the sh!t out of me. Only done it a few times, but it's not a nice feeling. Try not to do it often.

Other than that only danger to me is the down shift from second to first can be a bit rough at zero throttle if you hit it at just the wrong time (falls just short of chewing on your steering wheel, but not by much!)

I've done a lot of looking into the INVECS II (our tip box) and been amazed about how it works. Even read the technical manual section on it. I could give you a summary of the more interesting stuff if you like, but it'd be a fair essay and I haven't written one of them in 11 years lol.

I drive in Tip Mode all the time - some days I forget to switch to tip mode when driving and accidentaly shift's up to neutral, not a nice sound.

There's a way to change the shift direction but i'm too chicken to even attempt it.

Another thing, I have never tried to shift down from 2nd to 1st, I don't think there is a need for it.

To answer your question, driving in tip mode is fine, just service and change oil regularly.

but keep in mind that it automatically shifts down for you when the rev drops too low... i've shifted from 2nd to 1st thinking that i was going from 3rd to 2nd at about 40 odd ks... as travis said: falls just short of chewing on your steering wheel lol

and also when u change from auto to tip there is a very slight delay, when i first got my car i kept changing as u would in manual i.e. left-down and then i dont end up changing gears because my down movement is with in the point something of a second delay, u'll get use to it pretty quickly though if u use it a lot.
