Hey guys, i just booked in for a service at my local mitsubishi.. reason being im due for one but also yesterday when i was driving all of a sudden i could hear a light scraping noise which seemed to be coming from my front left.

It then went away after a number of seconds. Later yesterday night after this first encounter the sound came back another two times. I was traveling not very fact ... aprox 60km/h. I found that applying my brake (even just softly) would stop the noise. I didnt have to bring the car to a stop to stop the noise in other words.

Im gona mention it to the service centre im going to but would like to know if anyone has any idea what i could be looking at. For the moment ive stopped driving the car.

I had a similair thing. Was worn brake pads.. one side was worn uneven and was scraping my retaining pin. Get em checked because it can score your discs

yeh i had the same problem. It was the pads warn unevenly. I just brought new pads and changed them my self and its been fine ever since

worn brake pads will sound kind of like nails on a chalkboard... does the noise get louder / happen more often when turning & braking at the same time?

When I got new brake pads it cost me about $130 for some good quality ones, that was at trade prices, so maybe around $160 retail? I replaced front and rear at the same time even though the rears had plenty of meat left on them, up to you if you want to do that or just replace the front if you don't have the extra $$$'s laying around.. brake pads are fairly easy to fit, the rear is a little more tricky, but you will find some good guides for it on this site, or http://www.completefto.com.au/FTO_showcontent.asp?hid=189

You may or may not need to get your discs machined, just call around a few places for prices & to get them checked if you can, avoid places that seem suss and want to charge way too much for machining & fitting new pads ... I can't remember how much I was quoted for machining, but I ended up not getting it done cause it was too expensive & figured I could buy and fit new discs myself for that price...

Don't want to scare you out of it, but I have heard some horror stories about Mitsubishi dealership mechanics, basically most of them don't know FTO's & can bugger things up. - Brakes should be no problem though , any mech would be able to handle that...

my inner plastic guards were scraping on the tyres, only solution was to cut away the bottom part.

Would happen when i did full locks. Since removing them, ive had no scrapping noises.

Hey i've got that same problem... is it bad if i just leave it?

i talked to my mechanic about it, he said if you don't take it off it will end up being ripped off later lol.

RE: my probs with noise..

took the car out to try assess it a bit better... doesnt get louder .. the noise dampens upon me pressening the break. Also, the noise isnt always there. E.g. i drive to shops (5 mins) dont hear it at all. On drive home might come up 2 or 3 times today.

The noise i describe as sort of a scraping / hissing. its strange ill put it that way.

The prob only begun yesterday so gona try keep it off road. Am booked for service on monday which inc. brake pads etc ill mention it to them. If its the case then im happy with that and not my car about to die on me.

Id certainly be absolutely sure it was the splash shields before cutting chunks out of them. Look for evidence of rubbing before going at them with the knife!. They are not cheap to replace (or easy to get).

when it comes to handy work im useless.. like i cant even draw properly .. i leave it all to the pros. costly but safe

Got serviced today.. roters machined and new brake pads $250 on top of the service
