Bennoz FTO... almost incinerated!

So Im having one of those 'sensational' driving days, belting my way out of Newcastle this arvo (within legal limits of course  ) and Im about to hit the on-ramp for the F3, and smoke starts billowing from my dash.... 8O

Oh f*ck is my first thought - then smoke starts billowing from the centre console, rear seat, boot & from under the bonnet... thick white smoke.

I pull over in a real hurry, the big brakes haul me up quick smart, I jump out as I can hardly see or breath in the car & try and asses the situation. After getting past the first panic thought of "Oh god, Im a million miles from help, or a hose! Im gonna watch the car burn to the ground...."

I thought about it & the only thing that runs from engine bay to boot that could burn is fuel lines.... or the power lead for the amp!!! so I race under the bonnet & snip the sizzling amp line with my cutters (had my work bag full of tools with me) and run back to the car. I see a small flame from next to my seat 8O I clicked & remembered the bottle of water I bought some 30 minutes earlier & start dosing the singeing sections in the car. I pop the boot & do the same. Just enough water in the bottle to do the job....

Crisis averted.... my coronary condition returns to normal & I wipe the sh*t out my undies. Closer inspection reveals what had happened - during a spirited trip through a round about, my sub has slid hard across the boot & ripped out the wiring from the amp (I though the stereo seemed a little tinny) and bridged the amp power lead to the magnet on the base of one of the 6x9s...

Lesson learnt? Bennoz can strip & rebuild an engine in a day, but give him a wire & he trys to hide. Electronics is not my strong point!

And for those that have loose subs or amps in the boot.... mount them!

Will strip out the innards tomorrow & asses the damage :x

Ben, Ben, Ben :?

Man I'm glad to hear see you and the car are okay, and that it sounds like there's not too much damage. Did you have a fuse on the 12V line to the amp (within 30cm of the battery?).

When you get around to sorting it out Chief, install that fuse!. That's usually the failsafe in case something like this happens. If you short a wire, the fuse will blow, and save everything else.

I hope the damage isn't too bad. Let me know if you need any help diagnosing / fixing.

Glad that the tragedy was averted. Wouldnt do for the pres to be without an FTO.....(even though the VP still doesnt have his on the road  )

So, what are the odds of an extinguisher appearing in the car soon........
