FTO exhaust note changed... Very worried..

Okay, took the fto out for a spin (havent done in ages)...
Anyway i gave it a bit down the highway to overtake another car and then i noticed the car sonuded TOTALLY different.. Instead of the open sounding exhaust it now sounds like its shrunk an inch. very burbly down load but sounds restricted up top. Also the turbo build boost like crazy now.. just feathering the accelerator at idle the guage shoots fom 25 VAC to 5 Vac and is making boost at almost anything off idle...

It doesnt feel different but it sounds WAY different to before... Very concerned may be a turbo prob...

Any ideas? (by the way brand new High flow CAT in)

May need to be tuned if the setup has been changed

new cat ---> less flow restriction ---> faster spool

Lol... i had the new cat put on months ago.. Just saying that the cat is fine...

This literally changed over the period of a fec secs when i was giving it some..

Could i have screwed something in the engine? Remember my rings are dying...

if at idel sam u put your foot on the accel and straight aoff but look at the boost guage it should hit 0psi 0vaccum, if its any more or less your boost guage is out,

one thing it could be is the fuel, not mixing right and the rings dying could be a factor but not 100%, maybe the car is just finally running better i know mine has on and off days

Id check your wastegate actuator isnt stuck... if you are getting fast spool to over your preset level it could be the actuator.

Few more details would help with diagnosis though as it could be lots of other things too.

It doesnt appear to be over boosting... And as far as spooling quicker its nothing major. only a tad faster i "think"...
But the exhaust note... ITs WAAAy different.
like no FTO ive ever heard.... Will take it somewhere to get checked out when i get a chance (im not driving it atm.)

Sam you seem to be having days of big grinning and days of pure terror with this turbo conversion.

Stop worrying and get driving it

If it was just a different note during the time you were driving it (and not anymore if you start it again)

Then it could be that you didnt wait quite long enough for it to warm up.

If you take it up to MIVEC just after the car allows it (but maybe before its really hot enough to handle it) the note of the exhaust can change drastically!

It has a very sick sound, wether you are just at idle, or if you are revving.

(I know this is kind of an obvious one, but worth an ask)

Lol... my mivec is at 3,700rpm...
Once it changed it hasnt gone back...

Started it up just the (after a few days sitting) and blew a sh*t load of blue smoke out the exhaust after only 5-10 seconds (normally smokes out the oil catch can)...

So i turned it off and borrowed my mates car

Okay, droped in to see a mechanic on the way to work...

He said my I've probably blown a ring.

He said i can drive it but i'll prob get a fine for pollution and f**k the engine...

The pollution fine is what im worried about....

Is there anything i can put in it to make it from bris to the gold coast and not blow much smoke? (except empty the sump lol)

Perhaps some kind of oil or treatment?? anything??

It just has to make that 1 Trip... doesnt really have to even make it back (needs to go to joe and ricks anyway for new engine to be put in)

DONT drive it if the rings have actually let go. You'll just be sending bits of metal all through the motor & doing more damage to got know what else.... valves, head chambers, crank journals, oil pump...

Meh... Im throwing this engine out in 2-3 months anyway...

Is there any cheap fix? (i.e. under $500??)

Thats all good & well, but you want to be able to re-use your turbo yes?

lol your call.

Dodgy = the ring has hopefully made its way to the sump & not out the head into your exhaust & into the turbo. Carry a bucket load of oil & your RACQ membership card.

Sensible = Get a ride with someone else on cruise day...

I drove it for about an hour after it did it... rofl (was about 100km from home.)

What if i take the sump off and try and see if i can find the ring?

Nah, thats getting unnecessarily dirty. If its down there, it'll probably stay there.
