Known Issues For Engine Swap

Hi all just wondering if there are any known issues when putting a MIVEC into a GR. I know of one involving an extra sensor attached to the intake manifold on the passenger side. Is there any way around that?

Why would you need to do this :S? like won't it be cheaper just buying a GPX?

Not if you're doing it yourself.
But the story is that it'll probably be cheaper to buy a new engine than try and recondition/rebuild an old one.

Need GPX alternator & ECU & the cabling installed to run the Mivec feed from Alt to ECU, not sure if theres anything else that would need to be done..
Might as well get the alternator reconditioned before putting it in as well..
Maybe check out
www.mivec.co.nz theres a few people putting the FTO Mivec engine into lancers, mirages and etc, so if there are any problems they've come across with those they should be able to let you know..

So all I need basically is to run a cable from the ECU to that extra plug...correct? Are we talking about the same thing?

umm, i think different things, you might be thinking of the MAF sensor for the GR, GPX will have an MAP sensor
But the other difference is with the alternator, GR is 2 pins, GPX is 4 pins with 2 of those running a relay back to the ECU, you might need to run these cables seperately (if you're getting a GPX halfcut, maybe take the wiring from it), or they may be included in the wiring, but tucked away somewhere...
They're the only differences that I can think of .. sorry hope this makes sense ...
No

Dont think so. The GPX alternator has an extra plug that caters for the needs of the Mivec. The GR alternator wont work and from past threads, cant be made to work.

That's cool the engine comes with the alternator. But I'm more curious about this extra connection which isn't on the GR. Sorry about the pic but that's the only one I got of the engine bay.

Hehe, I wouldn't know one thing from another :S I've had a quick search of the interwebz for ya, but couldn't bring anything up about it...
Looked it up in the workshop manual? Might be something about it on FTOOC.. sure its not the diff between MAF & MAP Sensor?
maybe look up where exactly the MAP sensor is on a GPX (i'm not sure)

Thanks for the pics dude they definitely help! Ok the GR engine is missing one of these sensors. Now according to the workshop manual they appear to be the:
Engine coolant temperature sensor connector
Ignition failure sensor connector
Noise condenser connector
Since I'm not at home I can't tell which one is actually missing so I'll have a look later. Since my weakness is definitely electronics...my main concern is that these sensors obviously run direct to the ECU and I'm assuming that the alternator wiring will also. Is this an easy wiring job? Can any auto electrician do this sort of thing? Anyone on here done this before?

I'll elaborate more tomorrow Joel, but yeah, electrics are the big difference. You'll need a Mivec ECU as well

Thanx Ben! Looking forward to this elaboration.
Hey thanks for the offer dude. I'll let you know as I'm not entirely sure if this engine will come with the ECU or not.
