Engine start then die and also cut out while driving !!

Hi all, wonder if anyone come across this issue.

The engine will fire up and rev to about 2,500 rpm and then drop to 0 and engine cut out. (from start to stop is about 3 sec)

Got the car look at and the Mechanic said is the fuel pump... so $300 later all seems fine, the following day... something happens.

This time was in the middle of driving on the road.

The only way to drive the car is to rev it continuously as soon as I stop it will cut out. Sometimes if I rev it for about 30-60 sec the car will run normal for about 20min or so and the same issue returns. The idling is very low ..come to the 0 mark.

The only thing done recently, I had my Oil/Oil Filter changed about 2 week ago.

So I come to believe it might be one of the following (might be wrong too)

-Air intake
-Fuel Filter (can't remember last time it got changed)
-Fuel line
-Spark plugs

any one come across this before?, any help is appreciated.

('95 GPX with no modification)

Can't be the air intake, or at least I can't see how it could prevent it from revving harder unless theres a massive blockage in it somewhere and it can't get any more air after that certain point.

If theres no sputtering I can't guess that its the spark plugs either. I'm sure the more mechanically minded could have some better guesses though.

get your mechanic to check your starter motor.

Only thing I have done is wound the screw out a bit and it helps a little, I'm about to go out and try and find that diagnostic control terminal and do an ECU error code check. How do i pull the plug off the stepper motor to make sure no gunk is in it?

thanks guys, took your advise, so today I try to cleaned the stepper motor if it can get a temporary fix.

Man is dirty with bit oil and carbon . is it normal?

After it been clean, it seems ok but tonite took it for a drive. very low rev idle time, but engine did not cut down.. yet.

So I think I might need to get a new one

anyone know where I can get a new one?

Disconnect to car battery for 30min so the computer resets then connect it back up then start the car and let the car run for 30min and this should fix it.

This is what I do because it is something to do with the Stepper motor it has to find the cars idle point or something like that.

thanks izonme and khunjeng for the advise, looks like that done the trick. :P

I took it for a drive today (10-15min) and it has not break on me yet...

Will drive a few more times just to confirm, thanks again.

Just happened to me - my car did not want to idle. The stepper motor had died. cost me about $300 to fix. They can use an stepper motor from an hyundai elantra apparently.

hmmm cost me $150 to replace with labour. Except it was brought in from Sydney down here to perth? Mitsi motors quoted some bull saying they will have to take parts of engine of because it is an import and hence i have to pay for that and then pay for stepper motor which they will bring in from Japan and blah blah. Told them to get f'd and got it done within 3 days from my Autoelectrician!
