Everytime I shift near the red-line in 2nd into 3rd (not all that often to be honest) I get a little bit of gear grind... does that mean the synchro is rooted (which is indeed the technical term)?

I've just checked CAPS. Its not real helpful - cant find a 'reco kit' as such. All the individual part numbers are there if you really want them...

It seems that if you've got a manual gearbox and theres any problems its easier just to get a 2nd hand box. There is deadset no info whatsoever out there about getting a reco (except for those pt no.'s from Bennoz, thanx mate). Oh and nicolas it sounds like your synchros are just starting to go. Get a good quality synthetic gearbox oil and it will help it last longer (worth the money. Mine crunch anything above 5000 so they're gone.

Definately some good info in there thanx for the link Jono. I find it particularly interesting that the FTO shares the same box as a lot of other mitsubishi's, however I'm not sure which ones are interchangeable (mountings, etc.) Does anyone know any other cars that have an interchangeable manual box with the F5M42 of the FTO.

there's a section that notes the differences between different FTO models, and if you look closely, you'll see that the GP version R has closer ratios for 1,2 and 3, then longer ratios for 4 and 5.
would the synchros or any other 'consumable' parts in their 'boxes be different to a GPX's, or would a rebuild kit be identical?
also, did anyone find a rebuild kit for them?

I cant find any documentation anywhere that says the gear ratios are different on the vR. Even putting in vR chassis numbers into CAPS gives me the same gear part numbers as a GPX. Where did you read that?
This information came direct from Mitsi Japan:

There is an Adeila gear git you can get for it with the shorter ratios, but its only a 4 speed kit, you'd have to get 5th manufactured locally. Atomrally has it installed in his rally mirage (has a 6A12 in it.)

cant you leave the standard 5th gear in? or is it too long compared to the rest of the gears? wouldnt really matter for race/ rally anyway would it
