Tiptronic 2nd Gear

I've had a few problems only recently where if I'm around 4500 or over in second gear it doesn't change to 3rd gear in tip mode.

To change gear I have to take my foot off the accelerator and then change.

What would cause this problem?

Your torque convertor is on its way out. Eventually it will bang into gear and you will lose drive from it. I would get a replacement ASAP then you can get it changed before it goes completely.

Where abouts is the torque converter and how much do they cost ?

Your TC sits inbetween the engine and the gear box, where the clutch would be on a manual. It is about the same labour as replacing the clutch I reckon but what they go for over your side of the world I dont know.

yeah I have searched here for the tc but none of them say any prices just that they cost "a lot".

Then the post just dies.

take it to an auto specialist asap. Your convertor is streading itself to bits. Less metal bits in your tranny the better. If you wait for the thing to go completly full rebuild for sure.

just take the car to several places and ask for a quote. Then make up your mind.

Theres a write up of how to remove the gear box here http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=39835 print it off and take it with you so the garage knows exactly whats involved and can judge the timescale better. Over this side of the world a TC goes for £100. They were worth £50 until some bright spark (me) realised they broke and you didn't always need to change the complete box.

cheap fix, but best option? no.

"Why does the oil cooler have to be removed or at least cleaned out when you change or re-build a transmission?

Small metal parts or burned friction material get through the oil circle even in the cooler.

When the transmission is rebuilt and the oil cooler is not completely clean the small pieces of dirt slowly get through the oil circle back into the transmission.

In some cases the oil cooler is so badly polluted that there is not enough or even no oil. A sufficient cooling of the transmission is not possible anymore. In that case, or if there are big metal parts all over the transmission, the oil cooler has to be removed otherwise the rebuilt transmission will overheat within a short time and will get damaged again."

Even with new oil your transmission is still not fixed. Oil filter would mean nothing when your torque converter is faulty.
