Bodykit Legalities...

Ok, so from talking to Sam last night, the idea of adding fibreglass to the rear quarter / front quarter panels is kinda illegals ... unless you have an engineering cert
but ... I am wondering how far I'd be able to stretch the rules if I was to make some "sideskirts" which are still technically sideskirts but just extend further up the car than normal sideskirts... and what the G.O. would be if I was to blend these "sideskirts" into the car...
I guess the best way to explain it is with a pic .... (not going to be exactly the same... but probably similar to this) ....

stop trying to make your car looks like one of these and go buy one.

i agree, you'll ruin the fto's lines trying to mimic the elise and exige

i think everyone missed the point here,
i dont think he's going to copy that body kit/ body shape
think thats just the easiest way of showing u what he means
legal things aside, i doubt too many cops will know what an fto looks like, so with any luck u can pass it all off as "no, thats what the car looks like" lol
i know there's rules about angles and sharp edges for pedestrian safety etc... i think u r best to look it up on the qld transport site or something... actually i remember read through a heap of info on what u can and cant do with modding a car.... think it might be from qld transport site... google it i guess

Thanks Yang, at least someone understood the point of this post.
JFTR, this was not a "what do you think of this idea" thread, just "is this gonna be legal?" & as I said its not neccessarily going to be similar to the Elise rear vent ... I still haven't really thought about what to do with it..
I don't see how it would ruin the FTO's lines? It doesn't really have any 'lines' there... Please explain what you mean?
I think if anything, it would add some distinctiveness to that section of the car..
Point is, I just want to do something with the rear section of the sideskirts without just slapping on a mass produced 'piece of kit' like a Topmix or something ..
Also not planning it to look similar to these, but if it helps explain......;

i didnt know you were going for brake vent type quarters, as i understood it (along with the eliseto thread) i thought you wanted it to look like a lotus. they shouldnt be a problem, authorities just dont likesharp edges or parts protruding from the body to an extent

let me just remind u if u mould it onto the actual car body, u will have a pain in the ass trying to fix both the sideskirt and rear quarter...
MANY people in the UK fto club have moulded the veilside sideskirt onto the car body
and have problems with accidents
IMO, why waste the time on it? it stoo much rice....
point of FTO IMO is to look clean without all those exaggerated stuff...
pardon me if i sound rude...

Meh ...
I reckon go for it ... I saw a wide body kit they did on the supra in the states and it looked pretty hot ...
I have always pondered putting something similar on an FTO as it is pretty plain around the rear... Front has nice shape, the car does have nice lines going from front to rear, but there is just that spot that could be improved on...
Be prepared for a fair bit of $$$$ to be thrown at it though ... and I imagine it would take a fair amount of time to try and match the existing lines of the car...

there's 3 lines in the arse end of the fto, u can easily use one or more of them to build around
hey micheal, i know we are slowly going off topic here but have u decided on exactly what to do yet?
cos i'm thinking about the same thing, pretty much just a wide body kit.
the rear i'm thinking about vents (even going to make them actually feed to the brakes) and wider wheel arches, and at the front just to match the width i'm thinking about just extending the exsisting shapes out a little and wider wheel arches. and get sissors doors and leave the doors as they are.
maybe instead of building them onto the existing panels u can just screw/bolt the pieced on tight, as appose to smoothing the finish with bog and fibreglass and make the whole thing one piece.
this way if u have an accident it would be much easier to fix especially for the respray.
if u do have any plans already drawn out or something, would you like to share it?

Omg yes! Thats almost exactly the look I am going for!!!!
Maybe a little more flared at the rear & a bit more rounded @ the wheel arches..
.........
Yang, theres you pics
..............
Few things I will have to look into;
Engineering Certification ...
Insurance Implications
Cost 4 metal fabrication - wouldn't be cheap (might be better off going fibreglass still as long as I can get it certed)

Thats what i thought to when she first showed me the pics! i was like daaaymn! I asked her how did she go on about doing it, she sed one word - "Sponsorship" ! daymn! Oh and she sed all the work was custom. As you can see in one of the pics, the hood, bodykit, all custom made.
Here are some more pics,

it looks like the bodykit has been redesigned fom a d cuatro kit and then just had some vents added to the sides.
i still like i though

Yeah, I would make it a little more flared... Hot as though ... Thanks for the pics Shahrez ...
