Insurance?

I guess this is a newbie question...
I'm buying my first car.
I'm able to get an FTO for relatively cheap with barely any Ks on it. It's a '96 GS manual.
Everywhere I've been quoted on insurance has been between $1000-$2000. And as I'm taking out a loan already, I don't really want to get third-party insurance because if the unthinkable happens I'll be without a car and still paying for it.
What do you guys recommend?
Cheers.
EDIT: Great. Just saw the insurance forum.

2000 for a GS, you do realise a GS is is only 1.8 L model, its not a V6. Make sure if you do buy this you tell the insurance company that its only a 4 cyl.

Just car insurance. thats saying there is no mods, and u have to pay the full amount straight up.

Even so, that's bloody good. I know of a couple of people around the age of 21 who had quotes for full comp from JustCar around the 5-6k mark...
Jackaz: one thing you'll learn about being young and owning an import is that you pretty much get to pay whatever the insurance company says you will.
My advice is to shop around, because $2k is
a lot for a GS (if for no other reason, then because the market value of a 4cyl FTO can't be that much).
But, $1k for comprehensive insurance of an underage driver ain't so bad... hell, some of us are paying nearly that much just for 3rd party

impossible...i am with just car..paying 1600 a yr for gpx 1995 model...and the car is insured under my dads name who is over 50 and has 30+ years driving experience plus no insurance claim in the past 5-10 yrs...(i am not listed as a driver and still this expensive)...
unless you are doing one of those high premium low excess...or low premium high excess options...
