didnt take the calipers off . (lazy but meh.)
took the wheel off. used brake cleaner on the brake masked up the area i didnt want painted... then went spray happy
some paint went onto the rotor but a quick 10 min spirited drive cleared that.
im going to do my rears soonish, that wont be fun... *~delightful!~* handbrake cable

May i suggest best way IMO is to remove calliper (v easy think there is DIY somewhere) clean as above then use brush on heat proof calliper paint, less mess and has high gloss...... then leave and dont use car for 24 hours to allow paint to cure then will be sweet for many kms
think you can still buy calliper paint kits from repco etc

Mak sure you slacken off the handbrake cable from under the centre console... you'll never get the cable off the calipers if you dont. The rears are a bit of an ass. When you try & push the calipers back in, you need to use a set of needle nose pliers to wind them back in clockwise. They dont push straight back in easy.
