What is a purge tank?

Hi guys, i need your expertise, attached is a photo of a part, it just says "Hiruta Purge Tank". What is it and what does it do and is there a part number for it?

I didnt know it was called a pruge tank i thought it was a vapouriser thingyme bob for fuel emissions (as you can tell i cant remember the correct name). It is a legal reuirement in jap, not sure aus

yeah i checked it on the net, it says "Its part of the emissions controls. It "catches" fuel vapour from the fuel tank and sends it back to the fuel tank once it re-liquefies"
Is it important? If it is broken, does it need replacing or it's not important.

Yeah thought so, we call it a vapouriser in nz or atleast we used lol. Umm in nz it was illegal to remove one but my question is how do you know its broken?
Personally i wouldnt worry about

Oh i know it's broken because purge tank is made of plastic and it's cracked

BAD????
as i said before personally i wouldnt worry about, your fuel economy could be slightly effected but i doubt it would be even noticable

thanks for the comments guys, at first i thought it was an oil catch can too! or when i saw the word purge i thought it was NOS! haha.
