okay so i have a cable modem which is connected to my computer with a USB cord. i also have an ETHERNET router which i want to connect to the usb cable modem so i can have a strong wireless connection on my laptop. So my problem is, how can i connect the USB modem to the ethernet router ?
I have an ethernet outlet in the back of the modem, but the cord in the back of the modem which is meant to connect to the router is like a square thing which is connected to the computer by a usb. So one side of this cord is a usb, and the other is a square thing.

any help please ?

you need to get a cord with two square things (ethernet cable) and connect the router to the modem using an ethernet cable.. and then have another ethernet cable connecting your modem to your computer.

ok, i've tried to read what you posted 3 times now, and am still relatively confused about what you want.

i have a feeling the square thing he's talking about it the other end of the USB cable not rj45 cable (i have yet to hear of rj45 going straight into usb)...

Okay. One end of the cord is a usb which connects to the computer and the other end connects to my cable modem which is the one pictured.


This is the end which is meant to be connected into the router, but obviously it is not an ethernet.
What i want to know is, is there any way to connect the pictured into an ethernet port to get the router working ? If not, are thereeany suggestions please ?

That's just a different version of a USB plug. Any pics of the back of your modem?

Ok, so you run a network cable from the one you taged as spare, into the new router. Then run another ethernet cable from the new router to your pc.

Mind you, you may need to open the config page on a browser of the new router & disble the DHCP service - as those cable modems dont like not being the boss.

well there are a phew ways that i know of but im not sure which works best with cable cause adsl is different.
1) leave your square plug in the modem connecting it to the computer. have your ethernet cable connected to your ethernet port( you labbeled it as spare outlet) on your modem, connecting that to your routers ethernet port.

2) get rid of the square plug. have your ethernet cable plugged into your modem and your router, and using another ethernet cable connect your router to your computer.

like i said i dont know which workd best for cable cause i have adsl2+ but option 2 always worked for me when i had a modem and a router, now i have modem router in 1 thing lol so i only need 1 wire, u can simply buy 1 of those saving u time if u wont lol

See the problem with the router is, it does not let me install the software/hardware (the thing that comes on the cd with the router) without a connection into one of the 4 outlets behind it, as well as the main one which connects to the router.

Its like this:
I plug the ethernet cable from my modem to the router using the spare outlet in the back of the modem.
Then i have some sort of reception on the router, however i cannot connect to it because the square plug is meant to be taken out of the modem and plugged into the router.

So its meant to be something like. The computer is meant to be connected to the router via the USB/square plug.
And the modem is meant to be connected to the router using the ethernet cable supplied in the box of the router (in the spare outlet).

Im not too sure if im being clear with my problem. Like i can connect the router to the modem, but the square plug is meant to be taken out of the modem and plugged into the router as the main connection.

Unfortunately there are no routers i know of that allow you to connect your computer to the router via USB (the square one your talking about) and then your router to your modem via Ethernet. Routers rely on Ethernet connections to connect them to your computer so you'll need to do this:

Okay, first of all .. it's no longer called the internet - it is now known as the "Intertubes" or the informal "Interblag"/"Blagosphere"

Thinking of it like a series of tubes, first you need to make sure your tubes aren't blocked .. rodents like to burrow in them sometimes;

Also, forget what these guys are telling you about the square plug going into the square hole.. any hole's a goal .. just make it fit.

yep thats exactly what you need. you dont even need the square usb plug. like koolio said they rely on ethernet cables.
if you dont have a spare one lying around then dicksmith and places like that will help you with that plug

If you're only connecting one PC, you should be able to;

1st option.)

- Run USB Cable from Modem to PC & as long as you have the phone cable plugged into the modem as well you should be able to install the software / drivers & set up the modem using the Instructions etc
You should be able to use either the network cable or the USB cable from the Modem to PC though.

2nd option) Connecting multiple PC's
The ethernet out to the router is just for connecting multiple PC's ..

You can ditch the USB cable altogether; (but you will need multiple extra ethernet cables depending on how many PC's you want to hook up);

Ethernet from modem > PC
Ethernet from Modem to "In" port of router (if there is no "In" network port on the router (usually separate from the rest), just use any
Ethernet cable from router to any other PC's
Chuck USB cable in a drawer ..

i.) On the underside of the modem & router it might have listed a "Default IP Address:" e.g. http://192.168.0.1
- if both devices have the same default IP Address the might conflict - it's better to have a single Modem-Router unit all-in-one, but you can make do with what you have.
- If this is the case you will need to change the IP Address on one of the devices. Probably easiest to change the router - Disconnect the modem from PC & Power On router, connect to PC using network cable only, go to router web page e.g. http://192.168.0.1 & log in with the default admin password combination; usually;
un/ admin p/w: admin
u/n: admin p/w: password
u/n: admin p/w: default
or something like that - should say in instructions

in the network settings section (might need to search for it, you'll need to change the IP Address of the router to something else e.g. 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.2 or something

If you needed 50 bazillion network cables to get up & running they would have included them in the modem box.

As said above. All you'll need are the USB + Phone cable + modem & modem power cable (USB cable included for ease of setup. alternatively you can run it with ethernet instead of USB)
