FTO AUSTRALIA

OK guys I took my car on it's first trip into the city this morning and there were a few minor things that i wanted to ask if any one had these problems am i being paranoid or should these things no be happening.
I have a 94 Triptronic and i realised as i was driving in the traffic this morning that a few thing seem ed a bit odd.

Firstly the auto gear box does not kick back to 2 gear ever it goes to second when accelerating but when driving slow or stoping it goes straight from 3rd to 2nd. (this maybee normal but iv never had an auto which showed what gear i was in all the time)

The second problem I found was that when slowing down and the revs in the engine dropped the engine would rev it's self causing the reves to increase and kind of bounce the car.

Both of these problems could well be from the way i am driving as well it's a big change going from the Magna to the FTO. Also the car runs like a dream at any thing over say 40k/h. Any help would be really appriciated.

from my experience, whether you leave it in D or not, and slow down, the gear will automatically down-change for you, and you might get a slight jolt as it goes down a gear or 2, and of course revs will naturally go up momentarily

when cornering, ive seen most tips go no lower than 3rd, unless you slow down dramatically on the corner (and who does that in an fto?), i used to manually drop it down to 2nd for fast acceleration out of corners

The FTO uses the INVECS II Tiptronic/Auto which has some "smarts" and learns and adapts to your particular driving style. Its memory will be based on the previous driver and if you drive differently it will be a little confused until enough time passes.

A good idea for anyone who has just bought a FTO is to disconnect the battery for 30-45 min. This will wipe the INVECS II memory and then it will re-learn based on your driving style. Because this gearbox does learn and adapts itself to your driving style the gear changes can be a little different compared to other cars.

Cool thanks heaps that explains the down shift and the not droping to second deal as for the second paragraph.
It's like I would slow down to an almost stop the car will then start to idle but not change down to first or second (it only changes to first when i fully stop) the rev's with then start to bounce for use of a better word from say one and a half to two and a half thousand. I did noticed later that if my foot was planted hard on the break this would not happen it's more when moving slowly in traffic.

from memory, dropping down to 1st on on complete stop seems normal behaviour.. i dunno about the bouncing between 1.5 to 2.5k revs though.. perhaps you should try the invecs reset as rechi mentioned..

i dont have a tip anymore so maybe tip owners can give you better advise

On the odd occasion when I do put it in "D" (M2 with heavy slow moving traffic) - mine will accelerate up normally - 1-2-3 etc.... slowing down it will stay in 3rd until I come to a complete stop when it will go back to 1st. If I do plant the foot THEN it will drop back to 2nd.... haven't noticed my revs bouncing though'

if its jolting between gears (up or down) you should get the transmission oil changed immediately...

the only time mine's in D is when there bumper to bumper traffic or i'm doing something whilst driving.

i wouldn't worry too much about resetting your ECU's as they constantly relearn the driving style of a person - takes about an hour or so of driving before it is set to your way of driving (i..e mainly peakhour)

enjoy and make sure you bring it along to the next cruise in your area, check out the other cars and ask everything you can

Thanks guys I feel a bit better now knowing that it's not surposed to drop down to second to often. I think I will reset the ECU's and get the transmission oil changed just for a little peice of mind any way. I'll see how it goes on the way home I'll be on the M2 as well Teania (look for the red fto with the bouncing rev's) And to finish up cause i gotta leave the office now I cant wait to go on my first cruise with all the guys in Sydney shold be sweat.

ps - I changed my transmission oil to Redline and have noticed that the gears change a lot smoother.

I've never seen my tip drop from 3rd to 2nd. It always drops 2 gears to 1st if I make a complete stop or I'm crawling. The most annoying thing is at "give way" signs, where you haven't slowed sufficiently for it to drop you down to 1st, so you have no power in 3rd when you exit the corner. That's where tiptronic saves me the most .

While braking the tip goes from 3rd to 1st, missing second, but it should drop back to second if you floor it.

Hmmmmm why don't you guys just use the tip function?? Isn't thats the whole idea of having it???

keep in mind that the INVECS II is a "learning" gearbox and adjusts to your driving style and situation. Depending upon your driving style it will either change gears sooner or stay in the same gear longer. It will also downshift automatically if you break or take your foot off the accelerator when going downhill.

yes, going uphill or downhill, it will drop down a gear for you if you leave it in D, which is really smart.. so dont be alarmed if it does that...

even smarter is the fact that in downhill, it only does it if you take your foot off the accelerator, if you keep accelerating it keeps it in gear! weehee!
