Well,

Had my first shot at an engine exchange over the Christmas break. Put the last few things in place today and turned the key. Peeeeerrrfect. Have to say im feeling pretty smug right now. Included changing from an auto to a manual and rebuilding a driveshaft (had to repack bearings from an auto driveshaft).

Tell us more. What did you swap? I built a whole dune buggy, engine, fitted it and took a test drive in 4 hours. (It's a meccano)

Nah, nothing fancy, just rebuiding an FTO with a blown engine. I was sure I would stuff it up somehow. I took notes while I was taking it apart. If I can make any sense of them, ill put it up as a guide. Ive got to do another one yet. Used the engine out of the ute, so got to put another one back in to it.

Did manage to drop the car on the engine at one stage though. Put a hole through the front rocker cover. Luckily had a spare, so was able to fix. Oh and on another note, the short driveshaft is definitely different between auto and manual. The manual shaft is thicker and the roller bearings in the universal joint are different sizes as well. One of the roller bearings in the inner universal joint had shat itself and I though it would be simply a matter of grabbing one off an auto one. Ended up having to rebuild the one I had by replacing all the rollers from an auto. Luckily the only bits that had disappeared was the rollers.
