Mazda RX-8 opinions?

Dunno why but the thought of getting one of these has hit me recently ... I quite like the style of them and i guess mainly because it hasn't been done to death by hectiks with their skylines, 200's and rexxies ...

To be honest i dont know too much about rotary engines, i know that the older ones have high maintenance costs but ive heard these renesis rotaries aren't too bad ...

Ive always had a liking to their interior, don't think anything needs to be changed at all...

Also a lot of aftermarket options for body and performance mods, dont think they come factory with too much power but i reckon they got potential

thoughts?

I think they are a beautiful car. The Renesis engine is a work of art and apparently very reliable; economical too. If you can afford one, get a very late model one that is still covered by the free warranties that Mazda give out.

The amount of space in them is also unbelievable, those suicide doors are the sh*t. 4 adults in comfort without being cramped? And with not a hell of a lot more bulk than an RX7? Oh hell yeah! If I could afford one I would be all over it :)

They would be fun as a weekender/occasional track car and still be reliable enough for everyday. Designed to be more durable than previous rotaries.

hmm, yeh ive done some research into them

funny enough the best way to maintain these engines is to redline it a few times a day... the problem with the rx8 engine is that when they are not regularly driven hard and the engine doesnt get hot enough the injected oil sticks to the rotor and builds up as carbon. the carbon then expands when hot and grabs the apex seals and holds them in towards the centre of the engine... this causes loss of compression and the engine starts running poorly. Revving it out a few times just makes sure it blows out that carbon build up... In newer models of the rx8 mazda has changed the coating of the rotors to stop carbon sticking so easily...

The other main problem apparently in earlier models is oil starvation... mazda has fixed this in later models by adding a 3rd oil injector.

also stumbled across this crazy looking rx8 from england :o

The fact that over half the engine is mounted behind the firewall doesn't help XD

Awesome weight balance in those cars, I believe it's close to 50/50 isn't it?

just a quick point, rotary engines are known for using oil, two friends of mine in the uk have these cars, another firend has a 600hp rx-7 and they all use oil for some reason.

They tend to top up the oil by about a 1l every month, the rx-7 uses millers oil which is about $100 per 5l.

They run soooo well, sound amazing, just as everyone else has said, boot it a few times to keep it all clean inside.

I love these cars... I think you get most cars using oil when you boot them.

My mate has one, they are great fun to drive.
They have very smooth power and are forgiving if you step the back end out.
I would say get one BUT have $2000-$3000 sitting in the bank as you will need it if somthing go's bad.
