Weird sound when I brake

I was driving around the other day and coming up to a traffic light i started to brake as you normally would. Just before the car came to a complete stop, a loud noise came out of the engine bay. It sounded like a large spring had sprung itself off its orginal location.

I then drove off slowly after the green light and luckliy everything seemed normal.

Later that night i heard the sound again. This time it was softer but was still a sound of a spring springing off. It also sounds like someone plucking a deep note on the guitar.. you know what i mean..a "springy sound."

What is this? Sounds quite dangerous.... :(

thats all i can explain.... basically the sound of a spring that is compressed, and then uncompressed flying elsewhere....

Like plucking a string on a guitar..

Like a knife stabbing into a guys chest in cartoons..and the knife vibrates on the end...

I have no idea what it is.. just sounds like something springy that was held in place somewhere but has now sprung off..... only its still there and the sound repeats at every hard brake.

Could it be one of those clamps that hold the pads on?
Maybe you should take it to a brake specialist, i'm sure they will know more then some of us... You don't want to compremise safety...

But you're not saying it's coming from the break.
It's just when you break it makes these noises.

Where is it coming from? you said from the engine bay, but where abouts in the engine bay...

Have the car checked out at night when it's the most quitest.
And have some one outside the car....and listen for the sound and try to find out where the sound is coming from...
Once you can start to pin point where the sound is coming from, it'll be easier for others to help you.

Thanks,

Do you have an Auto?

If so just before my tip box went, it use to make this noise when shifting into 1st when coming to a complete stop.

Not all the times, but usually more when the gearbox oil got a bit hot.

So it clunks into first, felt thought cabin, and also could be heard.

I reckon its your problem, were you driving for a while? Hot day? After thrashing it?

The noise is sort of deep, like a thomp. not loud but can be felt.

Did it happen right in sync when the car was downchanging to first?

Sometimes do you hear a similar noise when the car shifts from 4th to 3rd?
