Wheel Bearings

It seems a lot of FTO's I have driven make a whining type sound which I think was the bearings.

Are the wheel bearings a weak spot in FTO's? Kind of like 3rd gear in the manuals which always seems to go

No, our cars are just starting to get old. Bearings in anything won't last for ever.

How long do bearings usually last?

The odd thing is that I haven't noticed worn bearings in any other car I've driven. Whereas so far I've noticed them in 3 FTO's, none of which were high mileage, at least not indicated

Depends on how much hard work they've done. My car had done 150k before the engine conversion & never heard a peep from them. Some 200 runs on the dyno & 250 kws later, they were gone within 3 months of getting the car back.
As fas I know, Im the only guy here thats DIY'ed it: http://ftoaustralia.com/v3/viewtopic.ph ... 2&p=221170

Its only $150 for a full set of both fronts, but a sh*t of a job to do thou... press required.

Is there a definite way of telling if they are shot?

With my car I hear a whining noise, almost like tire noise but different, and my brake pedal vibrates at high speeds. It doesn't do so at lower speeds and less brake force which made me think it isn't caused by warped rotors

will be warped rotors that is exactly how they feel when gone. And possibly wheel bearing but tyre sound is almost identical, check to see if they have scalloping in them
