I bought an FTO with a stock steering wheel (has airbag) and would like to change it to a non-airbag momo wheel. I know this is illegal, and that's why I have to do it myself. I'm not sure how the airbag in FTO's specifically function, but has anyone done this before? Will I be fine if I unhook the battery and disconnect aircon from fuse box?

Have done this a number of times now. Disconnect battery and leave overnight. Before proceeding, make sure your face is nowhere near the airbag while following the procedure below.

Remove 2 star shaped screws holding in the airbag. The airbag should now lift out. Disconnect cable from underneath. Wheel should now be able to be removed with a 17mm socket.

BTW, Youll probably also need to remove the instrument cluster and take out the bulb behind the SRS airbag light as well.

So FTO's indeed don't even have drivers side airbags?

Yours does. Its under the centre momo bit.

Yep, afraid so. But some FTO's didnt have airbags, so it will only be a problem when you need to get it checked at rego time. Make sure you keep the momo one for that. Oh and the moment you disconnect it, there is an SRS light on the dash that will come on and you will only be able to make it go away by resetting the error codes after youve reconnected the wheel. Id take the bulb out of the instrument cluster if you are going to remove it.
