Changing front knuckle and rotor

Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me, is it easy to take off the front knuckles (the part that connects to the strut and ball joint on LCA) + changing the rotor to accommodate a 5 stud setup?

In short:
I have the FTO brakes but with VR4 knuckles and 4 stud 276mm rotor.
What I want is FTO knuckle and FTO 5 stud rotor

Also for the rear, is it easy to take off the rotor and swap it to a 5 stud?

Easy = No need for special tools, presses, etc etc (ie, can be done with a jack, socket set, spanners etc)

Thanks in advance

Hey Spetz,

I don't reckon it'd be too hard, Dwayne (dstocks) would have the bits you'd need, you will however need a press to seperate the front hubs or knuckles as you call them.

Removing the hub as a whole from the car is failry straight forward, with the exception of getting it off the ball joint on the lower control arm. The ball joint can be a bitch to split without a proper ball joint splitter.

For the centre section of the hub, it need to be pressed out as it forms part of the wheel bearing assembly. Once out, its just a matter of pressing a 5 stud one in.

Rears are easy, the whole hub & bearings are a cast assembly, just remove centre castle nut & the whole lot comes off the shaft (after you've removed the brake caliper & rotor of course)

Thanks Bennoz,

It seems it is harder than I had hoped for and hence it's not a DIY job.

Do you know where dstock lives? (ie, which city/state?)

I don't need the parts now, but in 4 months I will

Any particular reason you need the 5 studs?
I have more or less FTO brake setup on my magna, which is same as vr4 galant.
Same caliper, but as you mentioned 4 stud 276mm rotors.

Is it simply to fit a certain type of rim you have or what? no real benefits to going 5 studs otherwise...

There is no real reason for the stud change, other than "since I need to change rotor and knuckle may as well have 5 stud"

Batemans bay isn't too far to drive anyway for me (actually it's an enjoyable drive)

I would like to attend however I am not in Australia at the time and will not be during the bonfire.

It does sound like a lot of fun though
