Full Engine Rebuilt on the MIVEC... need help!

Hi all,

I didn't realised that there is a big community on this car :).

I have a 1995 GPX manual and it is on 180 000kms at the moment. The engine is going fine but I had to change the timing bell, gaskets and seals and so I thought I might as well do a full rebuilt of the engine.

We took everything off and changed all the necessary components inside the engine except for 1. All the seals, gaskets, piston rings, bearing, water pump etc.. and even sent it away for sand blast and painted it chrome and black on the outside. Injectors has been clean and all the valves too. About 85% of the engine has been assembled back on but we are still looking for a tiny part where the adjustable valves or lifters seat on it. I am not sure what the name of it but it's makes of plastic about the size of the shirt button and there are 24 of it since there are 24 valves. Some people call it a retainer for the valve lifter I think. That plastic part has been broken and it looks like the photo below...

I am sure there are many FTO owners have rebuilt the engine before... any help would be appreciated as I love this car.

I have a feeling it's one of this below but I am not 100% sure.

Thankyou.

Hi guys,

Yes, I just want that plastic part only as some of it has been broken.

Do you know where I can order just that plastic part only?

Thanks.

I have recently had my topend rebuilt and all of my tappet aduster screw retainers had fallen apart and were sitting in the bottom of my sump.
I too had the same problem trying to find these retainers by thier selves, in the end we ended up putting the topend back together without them.
6 months later after useing my car to commute everyday its been faultless.
I will give the guy who helped me with my topend a call tomorrow and find out some more info for you.

its a tappet screw... you cant just order the plastic bit (yes they break easily but dont go anywhere until you pull the engine apart...)
youd be looking at about $35 each from mitsubishi

had to replace about 6 of them, 4 on this bank...

What happens if these are not used in an engine rebuild?

Ok from what i understand (Im no mechanc so dont quote me) they are a screw retainer their purpose is to hold the screws in place while you sit the head back onto the block when the engine is back together they do not have a purpose.
Instead of the plastic retainers we used heavy greese to hold them in place when we put the head back on and that was that.
Obviously I would not reccomend this because its not standard procedure, just letting you know how we got around it.

they dont hold screws in place, they hold collets.

a small circular flat piece of metal, im not sure of their purpose but if they aren't
held in place they could potential fall into the valves and other moving parts i think...

re: Juggernaut
i would go to my mechanics and i ask but we have had a major disagreement and i dont want
to go there again sorry.
i could give you their email and you could ask them if you wish.
autocraft@netspace.net.au

or call them on: 03 6234 1044

good luck!

oh and $35 sounds a bit dear for one...

WTF! That price is outrageous!
Seeing as I've adjusted my tappets twice in 3days and they still tap, I'm lead to believe that plastic sh*t is broken on some of mine.

I've been looking for these for a few days now. There is no f**king way I'm going to pay that much for a piece of a plastice a quarter of the size of a 5cent coin.

f**k I hate fto's even more now! I'm getting rid of this stupid car asap

And furthermore, you dont even know if that's your problem, cause you didnt want to open it up again for a 3rd time to check. 50/50 chance its either this or the hydraulic lifters...
