Somehow my car doesn't comes with the 12v socket, hence i'm thinking of installing one just so i won't get lost when my gps is running out of juice.

I will either get the original socket from wreckers or generic ones from ebay will do fine too.

But i don't want to risk cracking my stereo surround, so it doesn't have to be on the original spot.
Which also means i can't use the original 12v cigarette wire connectors that could still be under/behind the stereo surround.

Is there anywhere that i can tap out the 12v source to power the socket, other than direct from battery?

you could wire your gps to a switch if thats all you're after, buy a 12v switch from supercheap or somewhere, put something like the picture below in your glove box or something and cut off the alligator clips, have the red wire from the socket thing in the picture to one prong of the switch, then have a wire from the other prong on that switch to an inline fuse then to the battery if you want to be safe if not just straight to the battery, then just ground the other black wire on a bolt somewhere under your dash hidden away then just put the switch somewhere suitable and then you could turn the ciggarette lighter socket on and off. so you dont drain your battery

the other option is to wire it to your accesories, where the red wire would tap into the accesories wire just connect them somehow then you dont have to turn the socket on and off it comes one when the cars accesories is turned on, then same step with the negative wire

You can get ciggarette lighter or a plain 12v socket from supercheap for around $10.
