Fuel Gauge Jumping/Misreading?

So I just got home with my fuel gauge on rock bottom for 20mins, the fuel light came on for 5 seconds as i stopped at lights then disappeared as I drove.
Whenever I fill my tank the fuel reading goes from full to half within a few hours, then goes back to the 2nd mark when I start again.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Im 99% sure that fuel meter is read by a float on top of the fuel in the tank (someone verify?) which would lead one to assume that it has to do with either a dodgy float or a dodgy message/relay being given from the float.
Does anyone know - is it connected to a wire or something?

Dont know to be honest.
What I do know is that there is a float (probably foam) that floats in your fuel, and is connected to a metal rod, which sends the message through a coil to a strip which works your fuel meter. When the coil becomes cooler (less fuel) the metal strip straightens out and moves your fuel guage. Im guessing that it may be the resistor. Everything you need to know is here

Could be the float or your gauge. Not an expensive issue to fix.
